Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Today I took out the rocks that didn't have things living on them and scrubbed off the hair algae. I also cleaned off the back of the tank. I added a phosphate sponge in my filter because my phosphates are reading about .5. I lowered the time on my lights but maybe I should just turn the lights off for a few days like Nikki said. After doing all that work do you think I'm doing too much if I turn the lights off? I don't want to shock anything. My hairy mushroom coral split again today so things are doing well except for the hair algae. I think I'll leave things alone tomorrow and then turn off the lights for a few days starting Monday. The tank looks so much better without the hair algae all over the rocks. I hope this helps until I get the RO/DI unit.

Beeba, I actually believe Scooterman suggested the lights. If you want to, check your phosphate test kit to see if you can use it on fresh water - then check your fresh water for phosphates. I feel it is important to know exactly where the phosphates are originating from before the algae is eliminated, otherwise it may come back. I'm fairly confident that the phosphates are coming from your tap, but not 100%. You could also check your make up water for phosphates, as well as the sandbed and rocks. I'm battling nasty hair algae, myself, so I understand how frustrating it is. I'm slowly seeing it die off the back of the tank, and it is no longer a nice green color, but is becoming pale and brown in areas.

Good luck - and have patience! (I'm trying to convince myself, too ;) ).

I have my share of algae also, I clean, I test I clean some more LOL. I think when I ever do move my tank, I'm up to some major rock scrubbing. I think I'm getting phosphates from the IO salt mix, not sure but I don't know what else it could be. I need another test kit so I'll have to wait to test the new salt mixture.

I had a phosphate issue earlier in my tank setup and after testing every stage of my water from tap to tank I found out that the dechlorinator caused the spike in phosphates. I changed my dechlorinator. My tap water tests very very low on phosphates but my tank water tests at about .5. I haven't had any luck getting it down. When testing my water for changes it doesn't test with phosphates. Where else could it be coming from?

I guess if this hobby went smoothly it wouldn't be as much fun??? I'd like to have some down time to see if that theory is correct.

I just got through pulling my sump out, cleaning everything, then setting it all back up. Boy oh boy was that a job, sad thing although I've changed 30g of water, the main tank needs cleaning lol! ARggg!
I soaked pumps in vinegar, also whatever I could submerge in vinegar to work it's wonders, & what a great job it does, each time I get better at doing these chores, now I'm off looking for a vinegar tub deep enough to soak parts lol

Get your RO/DI going, find out what is in the food you feed, may be not the amount your feeding but actually what your feeding. Also fish waste will always bring in a supply of phosphates during the processing periods. We have a thread on algae, I'll link you to it, maybe we can get a little deeper in your problem, mine, & everyone else's.
