I now have a rodi unit in my garage.( 2 weeks) It is the first one I've owned in 26 years of keeping saltwater and I am already running into a problem.
I have it running into a 30 gallon container, with a float valve,,,,,,, that also is a top off container for my 240 gallon softy tank.
On this container is a JBJ auto top off unit, which I like very much. It does exactly what I want it to do and has been for 5+ years.
My problem is that the JBJ unit will activate 6-7 times a day as the water in my sump goes down. It will deliver a few cups to several cups of water at a time, which is fine. Once the JBJ ato starts, it will in turn start up the rodi unit because the float valve opens and it will run for just a few minutes 6-7 times a day.
Because of the "TDS creep " the resin in the di container is getting used up at a very high rate.

There is a Solenoid Valve controller with a high and low float that is made by SpectraPure, but it is $160.
Solenoid Valve Controller by SpectraPure

It's pretty cool.
It has a high point sensor and a low point sensor. When the water is used up in your storage container and get down to your low point sensor it will turn on the rodi, untill the water fills up to the high point sensor, which you can make as far apart as you want.
This will eliminate the rodi unit from short cycling constantly.
But to me the cost is too much.

Can someone diy a similar unit without the high cost?

I could just turn off the water supply and pump when the container is full and later during the week turn both back on for 1/2 a day, then back off, but I want to find a cost effective way of going full auto.

I have a similar but much simpler system. I have a 60 gallon resevoir with my RODI unit hooked up. It has a float VALVE hooked up (which I do not trust) to the RODI unit, but I turn the hose off after it is full. My JBJ float valve in the display sump energizes a little pump in the resevoir to pump the water inside into the sump. (it goes theough my Kalk Reactor.) This way, if there is a failure on the RODI shut off, it doesn't wash all the saltwater out of the tank, onto the floor. This is important, as must make sure if any errors, they happen away from the tank...

I'm hoping someone has a link to a cheaper unit than the SpectraPure solenoid valve controller unit or a diy one.

Another thought was somesort of a timer controlled valve on my ro water supply. Have it set to open and run the rodi unit, say twice a week?

Read on another site that a guy used a regular ol water timer for watering gardens/lawns.
That might be a option if I could get it plumbed down to the cheapass flexable plastic 1/2" pipe the plumber used when he put in my slop sink in my garage.

All you need is a relay and two float switches. These will control your solenoid vale
What happens is when the container level drops down to almost empty it will refill.
The key is to wire a plain old dpdt relay as a latch. I will get you a wiring diagram.
Remind me on monday and ill sketch one real quik. Im just away from a pc for the weekend. No
Tds creep, simple fix.

Hey Don. How would you do this with a powered RODI unit like the Vertex Puratek 100 unit? If you simply cut off the water supply to the unit the pump on it continues to run since it is plugged in. We shut ours down by unplugging it instead of turning off the water supply. Is there a way to have what you drew turn off the power instead of trip a solenoid?

Yup just omit the 12+ to commoin and replace it with 110vac hot if that is what your pump is.
