I’m thinking of getting aa Aquamaxx AF-1 rollermat or a Bubble Magus Filter Rollermat Instead of a filter sock, which I currently use. Does anyone know if there is any smell from the expended filter roll while it’s still wet? The Clarsea filter rollermat says that they make their rollermat filter with a chemical impregnated into the cloth. The others don’t mention this. Does anyone use any of these systems and can let me know? Thanks everyone.

i don't know, but I have read that changing the rolls (on either) is no fun
Yeah, I’ve seen a couple of video’s about it. It seems the biggest problem that I can see, is that if it’s in a cabinet, under the tank, it can be a pain. My sump is in another room behind the aquarium and I would have a lot of room. Other than space restrictions, it doesn’t look to bad. I am just concerned about the smell, because my wife, even though she has smoked for almost her adult life and now she doesn’t, still has a nose like a bloodhound. She can smell the slightest odors, long before I can. The fish room, where the sump is located, is the closet of the room where she does her artwork and computer work. Bad smells would not be good. Thanks for responding Spieszek, I do appreciate it.

Well, we are going to find out. I pulled the trigger and ordered the Aquamaxx AF-1. I asked several places that sell either this one or a comparable one, they said it doesn’t smell. We shall see. My wife’s nose will issue the verdict. I also ordered new IceCap 2k Gyre powerheads, some extra filter rolls. I also ordered a clean up crew from Aquarium Depot. Thank you stimulus money and thanks to my wife for letting me spend my half.

I got it today. It’s almost ready to go, I just have to modify the water inlet, my son is going to 3D an adapter and modify the hanging support since I don’t have a rimless sump. The hanger is just a little to narrow for the plastic hanger. I will let you know how it’s working.

It’s installed and it doesn’t smell. It is basically a mechanical filter sock that I don’t have to change often. It has 82 feet of filter material and you plumb the return line directly into its intake fitting. I think it was money well spent.

Yeah, I hope so. I will keep you posted. So far, so good. I also bought two Ice Cap 2k Gyre Pumps with a wifi controller. I will let you know how those work out. I spoiled myself with my stimulus check.

I am jealous of the wifi controller. I have been eyeing the new ones, the reef waves

I looked at the reef waves. The only thing I didn’t like is you couldn’t buy one wave maker pump with controller and then just one pump without controller. With the Ice Cap I could and it was cheaper. I have two pumps and only the one controller that run both. You might take that into consideration before you buy One.

I hadn't researched that far... I didn't know you had to buy two controllers. I will definitely look at that.

Yeah, when I was checking them out, I was going to get the Reefwaves but I asked Marine Depot, they said with the Reefwave you couldn’t just purchase another pump alone, you had to buy two pumps and two controllers. They said that that was the only way right now with the reef wave. That’s why I bought the Ice Cap.

WOW seems to be working great, congrats, I can't believe how fast technology continues to develop and improve this hobby. I have a tank, it is dry but hope to revive it one day, i just need to find it a place in our home where the wife will agree to keep it.

I wanted to give you all an update on my Aquamaxx AF-1 Rollermat. This has to be one of the best, if not the best investment I have ever made. This thing is absolutely wonderful. There is no smell, it is simple to change out the rolls. Disassembles easy to clean it. I love it.

Thanks for your update. I am wanting to get one once they come back in stock. I keep seeing reports of some acrylic rods that are in it that have been breaking for other reefers. Has this happened to you at all?

No, I haven’t had that problem. Mine were intact when I received it and I haven’t hade a problem since. I did have a problem with the motor, it just wasn’t working correctly, made a grinding noise. I let Marine Depot know and they sent me a brand new one. No problems since.
