I should have started a thread when I first got the tank, but got lazy So heres what I have done so far
(all this was about a 3 week period)
I picked up a tank up north after a Baker lake after a camping trip

First thing I did was built a stand my first one lol. Came out pretty good, but after I finished building it.
I found a crack on the back of the tank =( A biggggg one !
heres the tank and stand before replacing the glass

The reason why its half rimless is because that was the only way I could take out the broken glass lol.
It came out pretty good so I like it.

Then got the glass replaced and stand painted

Heres the really sad part, I ordered a glass-holes.com overflow kit my first time at drilling a glass hole
Failed! CRACked the glass that I just replaced lol   No picture of the break WAS too frustrated

Well thats it for now will be posting more updates soon

Cool project! I am doing a 12" deep build right now also. It will be interesting to see how you set this up. Job well done.

Here's a tip for drilling, when you have a buddy over helping, you have him hold the garden hose over the spot and run water there constantly while drilling. That's the good thing about working outdoors. No mess to mop up after ;)

Looks like this will be really sweet and the dimension look really cool! Good luck with it! I'll be tagging along! :)

Got 2 questions for you guys
What would be good paint to rattle can my stand and hood? I want it super black.
Got any ideas how I can hang my Temporary diy hood

IMG_20110729_073735.jpg

plan on using till I find a fisture I can fit all my LEDS in

Noob, are you not a little worried about the tank splitting at the seams without the top brace in place?
Sorry you are having some bad luck drilling. Stick with it. Let the bit do the work.
I hung my lights on two heavy duty shelf brackets with a drawer runner attached to each bracket.

That might get your wheels turning

Peepie this time it wasnt from drilling =(. I had everything all plumbed. I was trying to remove a pvc pipe from my return ... SO sad . Im looking for another 24x24x12 cube or waiting for some free glass from a friend

Cool dude!

What is the thickness of that glass btw? It looks pretty thin without the brace. You may want to do a little research on euro bracing. It may be just the ticket for your project.

Keep up with the updates.

Yep, 1/4" glass will hole NP, it's the fragility of the over all tank structure that worries me. The euro brace will help strengthen it. Especially if you have an impact of some type. Like rocks falling or from outside the tank.

You should be fine though as long as there are no accidents.

Keep up the good work!

After 4 trys,4 pieces of glass, and a whole lot of crying. Water test is leak freeeeee!! =) NOw time to get this sucker in the house, but before that I gotta clean up some silicone thats all over the glass and paint the back. Does anyone know of a good silicon remover?
