I read an article recently that claimed some over-the-counter salts are deletarious, e.g containing heavy metals, etc., e.g. Instant Ocean. I am setting up my first 55 gallon reef and have already purchased the 200 gallon mix of Reef Crystals...what brand of mix do you use? I don't have the article in front of me, but if I recall, it recommended something with Marine Mix in the name. Thanks! Don

don't believe a word of it because it was a flawed test. There three salts you do want to stay away from because of real life problems and these are the 3 marine mixes: Marinemix Bioassay, Bio-Sea, and Coralife.

I use instant ocean, It works great for me, I would rather add my own calcium and mag to the levels I like. HTH Steve

I think most over the counter salts are fine. Yes they do contain higher levels of some metals and other ingredients but their is no evidence I have seen that these are deletarious.

I use marine environment 2 part from aquacraft via internet. I like this salt and believe it is quite good. I like the way the parameters mix right on target quickly and easily. My knowledge of manufacturing practices and such also lies in favor of this salt. however, salt usage is a controversial and personal topic. I don't really think there is anything wrong with any salt in terms of toxicity if they are used properly. No ASW is perfect. Each has pros and cons. If you have more specific questions I can try to answer them.

Sincerely...Collin
