Saltwater Newbie

Just registered and wanted to say hello. I am working on a 65g reef tank. I'm new to the saltwater arena and look forward to any suggestions on beginning a reef tank. I just bought a used sump tank and set it up this weekend. I'm about 6 weeks into this and am loving it so far (except when I get impatient and do something to kill a fish).

Welcome to RF :welcome: As suggested ask away! We would all be more than willing to answer any questions you have. We have a section here for members just like yourself called New To Reefkeeping which you should check out. It has a few links etc that you might find helpful. Best piece of advice to give you to start off with is take it slow and learn as much as you can. Good luck and hope you enjoy it here

There are several hundred if not thousands of years of combined Reef Keeping experience on this forum. All are GREAT people as well.

Going slow is the most difficult thing to do in this addiction, I mean hobby. Just avoid looking at fish if you are not ready to add them When you are ready to add new fish, do your new and old tank mates a favor and research your new additions before you purchase them. Have fun!

Just remember, flow is your friend. You know you have too much when you're blowing the scales off your fish.

I had to learn the going slow thing the hard way, a few poor fish paid the ultimate price. The tank seems pretty stable now, especially since I got more flow going. PH seems a bit low at 7.9-8.0, but everything I've read said to just leave it be. I don't have any corals yet, maybe in another month or so I'll see how things are running. I was thinking about getting some pulsing silver xenia though.

A good piece of advice with adding in corals would be to make sure all of your water parameters are in check and stable. You want to make sure you have the proper calcium, mag and alk levels all in balance just to ensure you have good success.
