Hello,
I have a temporary tank that contains a small puffer and tang. Can I use city tap water and ocean salt?
No Live ock, or sand. Just fish.
Thanks,
Angie

There is alot of phosphate in tap water. That can stimulate red algae growth(cyano bacteria) believe me you don't want it:). You can always try using distiled water. And Welcome to Reef Frontiers!

Angie,

As long as you use a water treatment (like this one), that removes certain chemicals from the water you should be ok with just fish. How big is the tank and how temporary is it?

edit: do you have any filters on the tank?

Use what ever is cheap and easy. Just dechlor the water. You'll need to do so many water chanes to keep it alive anyways it would be a waste to use expensive salt and di water.

Thanks fo all the advice. This tank is just temporary until I set-up the large tank.
This temp tank has two hang on filters, heater, and fake stone. Just didn't want to sink money into this, if I didn't have to.

Thanks again to all!

Just make sure when you set up your "large tank" you don't transfer the water. It would be ideal to make all new saltwater with Distilled or RO/DI water.

Yes, I thought that by doing this, I would not be able to use this water for the larger tank. But thats okay, because I have another 29 galloon tank that I will use the water for.
Thanks for advice.
