Sand And Rubble

I have fine sand in the tank and I want to add a jawfish. what should I add to the sand to make it suitable for the jawfish to build his or her burrow?

I had some several years ago. They seemed to prefer small flat pieces of shell and would build their tunnels like masons building a brick wall. Take a look at CaribSea Aruba Shell substrate.

idgy - read (or re-read) the article I linked in your thread: Blue Spotted Jawfish. In the article it talks about providing appropriate empty shells or dead coral pieces for the jawfish burrow. I hope you find the article helpful for your set-up.

I did read the article and thanks. My question really should have been where can I buy shells and dead coral pieces online that would be suitable for the jawfish.


I was writing the question at work and had someone breathing down my neck to do something. I always seem to have a question and always write them in a hurry at work. I never learn to write it down and then write the thread when I have more time.

ROFL - I understand! I hate that! Sometimes I have to start and stop so many times, I forget what point I was trying to make .

If you have a local store, you might be able to find some empty shells there. Some online retailers sell empty shells, also. Check out some of our sponsors. Premium Aquatics sells them. I don't think the jawfish will be too picky on size....as long as it can move it around. What you think is suitable, the fish might not think is suitable....so I'd think various sizes would be good. If you have some pieces of rubble from live rock, then those could be used, as well.

Is it ok to mix fine reef sand (which is already in the tank) with Florida crushed coral?

This was part of the description of Carib Sea Arag-Alive Florida crushed coral -
Live rocks and most invertebrates can be added immediately. Gradually introduce fish within the first 3 weeks, and do not exceed one inch of fish per 5 gallons during this time.

Will the crushed coral create and disturbance in the tank?

instead of adding crushed coral to the tank would this be a better choice or does the blue spotted jawfish still need more of a mix with the sand.
