saveing stuff after a fire

hey all

well its been a while since I was last on (nursing programs and working take up too much time lol) and I have a question that I can't answer myself so I figured someoen here could for sure.

As some may remember I had a house fire last summer and lost both my tanks but I before the house was demoed I pulled everything out of both thanks that I thought I could save and have 30 lbs of live rock that I am not sure what to do wtih.

My concern is that the fire dept didn't just use water they also used some sort of foam and I am not sure if they will do anything.

My rock is reef bone at the moment but I don't just want to throw away $250.00 worth of rock. I have it in a large bucket with power heads in it and not sure what else to do

any thoughts

Also my skimmer took a bit of a wack too. the tube melted a little and it is a little pushed in I had a look and water and still go though it with no problem I just wanted to ask if this would cause any problems


Please bring all info anyone has if I can't save this stuff I am looking a long wait to get my tank going.

Hi, I am really sorry to hear that happened!! That's really crummy, to say the least. With your rock, I don't know if boiling it all off would help? But with it being a chemical, maybe that wouldn't be a good idea. How long has it been soaking in the tub?

just it but try it slowly.... start with inverts and smaller simpler creatures.

you could just boil it in RODI and then reseed

I think it'll depend on what chemicals are used in the fire suppressant. Might post something in the Chemistry forum. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Boomer can tell you exactly what chemicals ended up in your tank!! Considering one of his specific interests, I wouldn't doubt he knows the chemical make up of the fire suppressant.

i would just do an muratic acid bath. there should be a thread here somewhere where someone did that. remember, water first, then the acid. good luck. can get the acid at any home depot or lowes.

i would also say muric acid, If you wanted to you could also let it sit in a bucket of SW and run a phosban reactor packed with carbon..

I'm guessing but they might have used aqueous film forming foam not sure if it would have any major affect on your rock as long as u clean it exceptionally well. the mix is 94% water and 4% agent hope that helps

I have it just in reg water at the moment but if I need to get some acid or something like that then ok all i need to do is find it I hope that i cna get it. I was thinking of just using bleach but I didn't want to do anything with out asking you all first
