good day all. its been a while since I have been on here but with the new little one now in the family I haven't had the time lol. I am wondering what I should do. I am looking to do a small school of tangs in my tank but I am being told from some people that it is ok to do but then others tell me that its a bad thing. I have a 55 gal tank that I am working on with about 14 lbs of live rock/reef bone and lots of swimming room. I also have 2 striped damnsles and a blue velvet that I will get rid of and I also have 1 yellow tang in there right now. what I want to know is if I can get 2 or 3 more in there and still have room for a few other things or if I can even do that. I have always wanted 1 or 2 royal angelfish and a couple clowns as well. I don't know if I can make it happen but I really want to know if I can or not. I also plan on getting some soft corals as well I don't have the lighting for hard yet and I would rather do the fish and soft before I have to shell out about 500 bucks for some good lighting. Is there any one that think I might be able to pull this off or is it a pipe dream and a waste of time. I don't mind down sizing my plans if I have to but I have a thought in my head and I really want to make it work....can anyone help me with this?

Sounds like a lot of load for a small tank to say the least as well...Also, with such a small space, you may have a little bit of quarreling going on with a few tangs in there. If you were going FO and not worrying about corals then maybe a wet/dry would be an option to keep ammonia and nitrite un-detectable in there to handle the bigger fish load (because 14lbs of LR won't cut it) but seeing that you want corals etc. not adviseable as the nitrates produced by the wet/dry would kill the corals...Defintely if you are going to go ahead with it, a good skimmer IMO is a must, as well as a sump, and definately more LR (they reccoment at least 1-2lbs per gal) Just my 2 cents...HTH:)

Sounds cool but, in a 55 you may run into a lot of problems later on down the line. I wouldn't recomend doing a school of tangs in a tank that small. Even with the best filtration space is still going to be an issue. If you wanted to do a school of tangs safely i would suggest getting a 210 or something around those lines with enough swimming room for all of your fish.

I definately wouldn't recommend more than one tang in your tank, as they would likely show aggression towards each other, and their environment would become a stressful one (even if they are different genus).

lol I just don't get it I have people telling me that its ok on this end and other people telling me its bad. I don't think I need much more for water flow of filtration. I have a fluval 304, a good skimmer and a power head in the tank. I know I need more live rock I want about 45 lbs. I would love to get a pair of royal Angelfish if that would be ok insted of the tangs. I just have so many ideas and I don't know what will work and what won't lol

LOL...I say buy a 2,000 gal tank and throw everything you want in it:lol: Best of luck to ya:)

lol that sounds great but I think that the wife might have something to say about that with a new born in the house. I do plan on a bigger tank but not right now. would a tang, a pair of royal angels and a few clowns work in something like what I want to do?

I've got one on the way so it's spend spend spend for me now!(LOL) I'm not absolutely sure how big royal angels get, but other than that, you should be fine. I have a yellow tang, 2 clowns and a small wrasse in my 75 gal now. I want to add a royal gramma and that's probably. But I'm a freak and don't like too much bio-load so I probably won't be the best person to ask:lol:

If you are going to go with that heavy a fish load a big skimmer is a must skip the tangs like you say and probably only a few softies. I wouldn't even go he extra dollar for additional lighting because with that load you won't be doing hard corals at least not without heavy water changes and heavy skimming. Just my opinion. All the best with it!

hmm. one tang is even alot for a 55g. I reccomend a 75g minimum for tangs. Sorry to say that fish load you listed... would be heavy in a 200g tank. IMO

darklcd - by royal angels are you referring to the Regal Angelfish (there are so many common names for fish)? If so, then I would strongly recommend not to have regal angels. They are difficult to keep, and one Regal is recommended in a tank of at least 75-100 gallons. So, not only are you trying to keep more than one, but you would be trying to keep a difficult fish in a tank smaller than recommended size. If you want an angel, then one of the Centropyge angels would be a better fit, and are quite beautiful. Here are some articles on the Regal Angelfish:

Observations on the Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus)

so by the sounds of things I don't have much of a choice on what I can put in there and that sucks lol... is there any angels that I can put in there that are close to the colours of the regal that would work with what I have or should I just for get it and revamp what I want to do?

well now I am not sure what I want to do all I know is that all my ideas have gone down the shoot and I don't know what to do. if any one would like to give me an idea on what I can do it would be great. I am going to be getting about 10 lbs of live rock this week so its a start but what should I do for fish I really want to get a angelfish but I would like something that I can get some size out of what should I do?
