We just had about 130 baby seahorses born. They are Hippocampus comes (Tigertails) and the mommy is one that we raised from birth. They are so unbelievably cute!!

WOW!! Congrats! What do you expect for survivability? That is really really cool!

Congradulations Vicki!...Please keep us posted on this. I woud love to learn how to raise these.

Thanks everyone!

I don't really know what to expect on survival rates. We have only had one batch before - with those, we raised 8 past all the fry danger stages.. then lost 4 to "incidents"... so actually 4 of 75 made it to adult. One part of me says we can do better this time... another part says I could lose them all tomorrow (which is quite common). We have them in 4 completely separate set ups and we'll just do the best we can... water changes and feeding up to 4 times per day.

I'll post from time to time to keep everyone updated.

Well, my Ringo beat you by a day! He (H. Reidi) surprised my Saturday morning with about 30 new fry, only two weeks after giving birth to about 50. Survivability is very low or zero, I am trying both frozen and freeze-dried Cyclopeeze but they seem to only eat newly hatched brine shrimp. Of the original 50, only 5 are still around and 2 of those are pretty skinny. Most died around day 7 (Internet info says day 4 is critical). However, 2 are fat and showing the newborns around.

I'd be very happy to raise 2 adults from each young herd (especially every two weeks). Ringo and Kitty were at it again only 3 hours after he gave birth.....

Congrats!! If you've got reidi survivors at two weeks you're doing great! My guys are quite a bit easier then yours. If you ever want to try rotifers as a first food, let me know.. I've always got a bunch of them around.

wwoouuu concrats on your babies :) !! they are very cute.
Now we are gonna have to celebrate because i'm a mommy too. My snail had babies hopefully they'll make it too they are very super tiny but they are cute and way fast than all my snails. :), so cheers ;)

More pictures please....

Wink,

How are the babies doing so far??? Any more pictures?

Oscapus,

How about yours? Any success there?

I am in awe...

They're doing fantastic so far... got fingers crossed it stays this way. We sent about 50 to California and kept 95 here... so far we have only lost one! Last time we had lost 75% by this time. Seems like the next couple of days are critical times, but most of them look great. Most of the tummies are pink with new hatched brine shrimp. :)

My Reidi fry are still doing great. Yesterday (Friday) was their 3-week birthday, and I still have 3 left. They are finally starting to snick at the 'pods in their nursery but are still a little slow at it. Their growth and deepening of color in just the last 3-4 days has been dramatic so they must be getting a few....All 3 now are the size of a nickel, and have big coronets and cirri (sp?). They are starting to lose interest in the newly hatched brine shrimp, probably starting to get too small for them.

The younger herd from just last Sat seems okay at day 8, but I still see a few "downers" once in a while. The bodies are gone by morning of course. Probably 25 of that batch of 50 left. They are much more yellow than the older batch. They remain enthusiastic over newly hatched brine shrimp.

I have looked at a variety of small foods under my nice Olympus lab grade microscope, and think the freeze-dried Cyclopeeze keeps the food critters the most intact and most likely recognizable to young fry. With the frozen variety of Cyclopeeze, the critters have all their legs broken off and many are completely burst open. I am sure it is good for seahorses, but not recognizable as anything once alive. The worst is expensive frozen Hikari rotifers. Nearly every critter body is burst open with the contents spilled out, just empty husks and water pollution. Perhaps they are good products but were mishandled, freeze/thaw/freeze etc???? The Cyclopeeze manufacturer (just up in Redmond) has not responded to my inquiry as to what intactness to expect in their products. I would like to get a little bit of the very freshest from them just to see if my samples had been mishandled.
