Hi guys

I am fairly new to reef tanks. My tank is about three months old and I have a coral (looks a bit like a cauliflower)... that has something very yellow growing on it...... any ideas what it might be?

Welcome to Reef Frontiers!!! If you have a picture hosting site, such as Flickr or Photobucket, you can use the IMG Tags and paste the "photo location" into the img tags. Img tags are found above the response window and look like a lil' picture frame.

Until then, search for filter feeding sponges. Your brief description sounds like one.

Sharon, to post a picture in the thread like I did, use the image tags....

Right click on the photo, then click on properties. Highlight the entire address/URL, right click again and click on copy. Go to your post, type

Please note the IMG tags need to be in capital letters or they wont work. If I didnt leave the last g lowercase, you wouldnt be able to see what I was trying to show you.

Sharon, are you talking about the soft coral behind it? If so, there is that possibility. it could be growing faster than the soft coral, therefore out competing it for space.

Very nice shot!! Yes, it is possible. Sponges can outcompete corals and even put out toxins to slow the coral growth. Some sponges, especially growing in conjunction with Zoantids, can be harmful and kill the Zoanthids.

Also, sponges can have a hard time acclimating to our reef tanks. If they're on live rock that's being added to the tank, they usually die. When they die, they can become quite toxic to our systems. Sponges don't do well when exposed to air.

Unless you really like the above pictured sponge, and if you're noticing the soft coral declining, I might recommend removing that rock and removing as much of the sponge as possible from it. Make sure you do this outside of your tank though. Use a toothbrush to brush as much of it off as possible. The soft coral will be just find out of water during this procedure.
