shells, cocoons?

Recently, just above my water line I've discovered quite a few of these strange looking shell/cocoons? They look somewhat clear, brown, with something filling the inside of one end? I've tried doing numerous searches on snails, shells, cocoons, but still have no idea what they may be? I would guess either to be a snail or some sort of tube worm, but then don't know why they would float, nor have I seen any evidence of them developing into anything easier to identify? Any help, would be greatly appreciated.

Man they look like house fly larva cocoons. I dont know and have never heard of anything like that living in saltwater. There are tons and tons of stuff I dont know though. LOL hope that helps. Steve

Here is a picture of a house flie cocoon. I think that is what it is. Steve I would say as soon as they hatch the fish eat them. LOL Steve

I have never seen them either but then again we had a thread on here about water bugs on top of the water so it wouldn't surprise if they are fly eggs. But I would think the salinity woud kill the household fly egg? Maybe a its one of those bad pods like Cirolanid Isopods eggs or something? I hope not

See, that's the strange thing, they look pretty similar, but half of the shell/cocoon is somewhat transparent, while half of it is obviously filled with something? They also seem quite a bit smaller than the common household fly.. about 1/8 of an inch. They do not move, just stick to the sides of glass, floating right at the water level. There does seem to be less of them since I recently got my first fish, so maybe he's eating them? We don't have a house fly problem either, just a few pesky fruit flys that love our house plants and humidity problems with the house! hehe.. I also do have a freshwater tank and have never seen them in there.. but then again, also have numerous fish in that tank.

well you could take one out, put it in a mason jar with a little tank water, punch some holes in the top and watch and see what comes out. Im betting its some type of fly. HTH Steve

I think Steve may be right. When I put my uncured live rock in the tank, I had quite of bit of similar looking things, and they wound up in my sump. In my situation, I think the rotting junk in the live rock, must have attracted flies. They never transformed into anything, and I'm not certain if it was a fly on the american side, or from prior to being shipped to america. Just a thought.

Seems the they must be insect larva. Thanks all for helping with the id. I went ahead and removed the rest floating around from the tank and will continue to do so should anymore show up.
Perhaps it did come with my live rock. They did show up a little while after purchasing the last few pieces I have? Who knows...
