skimmer help

Hey Gaby. You'll want to make sure nothing is clogging the venturi. This would be the plastic piece that is connected to the input of the pump with the air line running to it. You might try running a pipe cleaner or something similar through the part that the air line attaches to. Soaking it in vinegar is also a great idea.

Good Luck
Brian

mmkay, it's time to modify your skimmer gabby!!
have you heard of people modifying thier needle wheel pumps to thread wheel?? well, that what were gonna do!:)
if you dont want to do it yourself i'll do it for you. i could do it in about 5 minutes, mabye you could bring it down to barrier reef sometime,
or i do live in everett right now, so mabye i could swing by if you cant make it down,
it will only cost you the amount of the "thread" that you will need to buy for the impellar.
here's where you can buy it, (i dont have any otherwise i'd give you some):

it's the stuff in the first line(pf4a)
and you can sell me your unused remainder:)
here's some pics of what we will be doing:

What’s the latest, Gaby... Bien, or no bueno?

no bueno :p.
i cleaned it for the second time i even added a tiny little bit more of vinegar than usual and still...the skimmer said to me ......no way you're making me work  .
Right now pretty much works whenever it wants to work or if it's on the mood  .

mabye you could bring it down to barrier reef sometime

does barrier reef carry that stuff dood? because i'd rather not order it on line :p .

well the latest on the skimmer :p:D ..... hmm everytime i blow on the air tubing thingy bubbles start comming but if i stop it stops making bubbles :doubt:  ..... i guess i could blow it for an hour to see how much skimmate i make  :D

i'm crossing my fingers they won't read this thread :p:lol:

Too late... It’s been read. :D My minds racing, But I’ll behave myself... ;)
It really sounds like something’s going on with that pump... Or actually the impeller for that matter.

It sounds like the venturi isn't working, actually. Again, is the water flow as much as usual?

yeah dood i've been touching around to see if i feel anything different and it's the same flow ....i hope that the strings thingys help .

Gaby, I don't think the mesh is going to solve your problem. It will be a nice upgrade, and you'll notice it when your venturi starts working again... but right now, the problem is that your pump isn't sucking air.

Go, MacGyver, go! You can make it work, I know it.

hmm hmmm Thank you very much to Chris and Barb for sending me their mesh :) i've been blowing on the darn thing for quite sometim? :p  .
now how do i go installing this again :p ? do it need to cut it? brade it? or do i just put it like in the pic? the husband wants to do it (go figure    ) .

pretend your a hippie, and your gonna macrame your hair into a plant holder...
nevermind, different project...

o.k. first off your going to have to take your pump apart..
take the impellar out,
then your going to have to take the top 1 of 2 layers of the needle wheel off, either by prying it off with some needle nose pliars, or you could dremel off the needles(see pic 1)
then you have to attach probably 2 layers of mesh to the impellar. remember to cut a little hole in the center of the mesh so the impellar post will fit, and fasten with the smallest size of zipties to the bottom half of the needle wheel impellar.
then your going to have to trim the mesh down to the size of the remaining needles, and probably a little off the top. you dont want it rubbing or dragging on the pump housing at all. it should look like this when your done(pic 2)

you need to add 3 layers of the mesh not 2.

i did it by cutting the pins off with a knife, then take a drill bit that is the same size as the holes already on the disc and drill 4 new holes about 2 or 3 millimeters in from the out side edge. place 3 layers of the mesh ontop of the disc and secure it with the zip ties i sent you. after you tie with the zip ties trim the excess off so its just a little bigger then the disc.
