I have a small 50 gallon tank. A few corals, many Xenia and other leather corals as well as 13 tridacnas. I was unhappy with my skimmer and bought a different one. It has been running for a week now and no foam has been produced. I then put my old skimmer back in use (along with the new one) Neither produces foam. What could be the possible reasons! All animals are healthy with fantastic colours so I assume all is okay. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Lorenzo

New skimmers often require a break-in period. Possibly that's part of the reason on the new skimmer. Additionally, when we put our hands in the tank, the oils on our skin can cause skimmers to stop working temporarily.

Also, did you change your feeding routine in any way?

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't changed feeding and the Bio-load of my aquarium is quite low as I have only 2 demoiselles, 2 clowns and a yellow tang. I'm sure it has something to do with the water but not sure what! Water is crystal clear and I feed sparingly 2 a day.

I agree with Curt. Whenever I feed my fish or put my hand in the tank, the skimmer drops off completely and won't pick back up for 30 minutes sometimes. Also, sometimes the skimmer won't produce anything for days if there is nothing for it to remove. I can go 2 days without anything and wake up one morning and have a full cup of skimmate.

My skimmer will stop for about an hour after I put my hands in the tank.. Then its back to normal.

So, you have had no skimming for a week.

Do you like what you see in the tank? If you have an alternate nutrient export like macroalgaes, this might be a good time continue with no skimmer and see how you like it.

My tanks never worked better than when I quit skimming, however I do run a large fuges with lots of chaetomorpha macroalgae.

Hello!
Well, the "older" skimmer is a Terra Nova Pro Beast 400. I don't know if the brand is known inthe States. I bought a new skimmer because the Terra Nova is extremel loud. My tank is in the bedroom and the noise is too loud - hjas nothing to do with air intakd! the motor makes too much noise! I recently bought a skimmer designed for 250 gallon tanks from a German firm called ZC-aquaristic. It also makes too much noise!! The recent skimmer produces no foam although it has been on for about 10 days. I re-installed the older skimmer (in addition to the new one!) and it has started producing foam!.

dude, do you even know which name brands he is talking about??
zc makes awesome skimmers!! and terra nova is basically a coralife skimmer.
lorbear, do you have the cyclon AS? was it new when you put it on the tank? did you give it a bath in hot water?

Hello! Thanks for the arrogant and rather tasteless information! It's because of people like you that I left America 30 years agto and vowed never to return! I'm sure you're an avid Bush supporter!

Back to the thread, you said it's been a week.
Mine (it's a horrible red sea prizm) took about 3 weeks to start kicking, don't knwo why but after that, everything was fine.... may be a little bit more of time.

I know skimmerwhisperer dood would be better at answering than me of course
