i bought a skimmer the other day and it needs a pump and a air pump to work, the directions gave me an idea on the ones needed, my question is how can i tell if i can improve the opperation ot the unit, by changing to bigger pumps,is their a way to tell when enough is enough

I've seen them, but never tried them. Some of the others here use "air stone" skimmers and maybe they'll know...

The efficiency of any skimmer is determined by dwell time, and bubble size that is to say, the longer the reaction area the better the efficiency, the smaller size and quantity of the bubbles the better the efficiency. if the water is run thru the skimmer too fast then it is not exposed to the bubbles for a long enough time, and if the bubbles are fewer and larger than they are not efficient in their ability to attract and export contaminates. what does the mfg'r recommend?
