Is it possible for a tank not to have anything in it for the skimmer to remove?

more likely to have a junk skimmer?
was working good at one point
ive cleaned it and tried a couple diff things but prod. has slowed drasticly. nitrates are less then 5 and all other para r in line

What skimmer is it and what size tank, how many fish, how often do you feed, how much lr do you have and do you have a fuge : ) This will explain more.

72 gal 2 tomato clowns 1 flame angel 1 domino damsel xenia frogspawn torch and some shrums.20 gal fuge with plenty of cheato. about 80 pounds lr ifeed fish once daily kent te skimmerr with a mag 7 runninning it

You should be pulling skimmate out of that tank with that load. The Kent skimmers aren't to hot or efficeint for that matter. Your chaeto is probably absorbing your trates. If you keep up on biweekly water changes you will probably be fine but you could always upgrade your skimmer to help out with organic export.

any sugg Ive been thinking of a octo dnw-200 or an etts but dont know what model yet and i dont think i want the noise of a downdraft skimmer since the tank is in my bedroom

The dnw200 would work, an msx160 would work, a das ex1 would work. All would work fine for that tank.
