I'm really worried about free flying particles and any type of cleaners my mom happens to forget about and spray in my room...if I remove the heater and use plexiglass on the top is that going to be ok or too much? Or what other methods can I use?

and is concern about airborne particles entering the tank.
Joker, I'm not sure if there is really any concern or not since most of already have open top tanks, I don't think it would be much of a concern unless she was spraying the tank directly or cleaning right next to the tank. Then I would think it could be a concern.

You should tell Mom that she could kill your entire tank If she sprays anything near your tank, like household cleaners, more so if A/C or fans are in that room. She can spray into a cloth away from any such potential fans & the tank & everything should be ok. Like James said almost every tank will be open air, no cover, better for cooling & gas exchange.

Could you post a sign near your tank or on your door that says something like, "Reminder: No aeresol sprays near the tank. Thank you"
...or something along those lines? Also a verbal explanation like was suggested above. Seems like that should do the trick for most family members. Young toddlers/children are another story...
