Soft starting for pumps

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

anyone know how to build or aquire a soft start module I can use for a power head?

Thanks

Right now there is only one on the market that is close to affordable. Search crydom soft start. Ive seen them as low as $30 and as high as $70 you just have to shop around all the google hits until you find the best price.
By summer I will have SS built into one of the Reefwerks solid state timers at a much cheaper price, much smaller and easier to install.

This is what your looking for.

Thanks Don, I knew this was right up your alley!

I did do some research from your first post looks like we need a relay and the start module then start it with a momentary contact push button? My problem is skimmer ATI 250 needle wheel cavitates (for lake of better word) sometimes on start up and I am thinking a soft start may help but need something that will start up automatically when I get a power outage or flicker. off the shelf would be great....

I'm not sure soft start is the answer. When you have a power failure the pump just doesnt want to restart? When this happens if you cycle the power a few times real quick will that get it going????

Greg has been working with me on it but it is one of this skimmers biggest problems (only one) but a real pain

If you turn the pump head so the internal magnet gets a different 'bite' on the impeller magnet it may start . The problem is when the pump starts if it loses 'traction' on the impeller magnet it chatters like a banshii. I think the mesh impeller is to much friction for the adhesive qualities of this pumps magnets.

Next option is to shave down the size of the mesh wheel so there is less friction. I just can't risk leaving the skimmer for 4 days trusting it will not fail and chatter like a banshii for 4 friken days. The thing will jump out of my sump.

Try to get it to lock up. Then pull the cord in and out of the wall as fast as you can multipal times. Let me know if that works.
