Chris 425-387-3230 please....

6 mos on one 3 mos on the other bulb and another new i always rotate. the t5s are about a yr old... but my 3 -250s are in good shape.... mostly from bottom up and a few starting everywhere i will get a picture.....

Single ended bulbs may have a crack in UV shielding or glass.

Double ended bulbs need to have UV sheilded glass in Pendants. If glass is cracked in Single ended bulb UV light will burn corals. If glass is broken or missing on Pendant UV will burn corals.

A common mistake is to handle bulbs with bare hands. Oil from hands will cause uneven temperature transfer to glass. Glass will break often because of this.

Another common mistake is people mixing corals. Softies such as Devils hand in a small environment. You can see how protective a soft coral is by putting it in a bucket of Your tank water after doing a water change. Often your water will change color due to Softy putting up a defense or being irritated. That water color change is the softies defense by producing a astringant that will often stop growth or kill SPS.

Corals produce a mucus or protective slime when they feel threatened. If you do not wash your hands inbetween touching corals. That protective slime will burn other corals causing bleaching.

A electrical short in your tank may cause bleaching also.

Chris, I hope you find your issue quickly without any more losses.

Is there tissue loss from the bottom or just bleaching out of the color?
How rapid of an onset?
I suspect the bulbs too...

This struck a cord. I have a "mother colony" that is doing just fine but I find that it is bleaching from the bottom up very very slowly. I attributed this to a lack of light through the colony. Any suggestions? HFfishy what were you going to refer to if the tissue loss was from the bottom?
Thanks
Chad

Good to hear that you are back to normal. There will be many more Millies.
Thats the fun of searching until you find the right color. ;) I hope this means we will see more of you while searching for colors!:)

Acro eating flatworms ??

My guess is perbaps HereFishyFishy was going to have you check for acro eating flatworms. I think we picked them up about 6-8 weeks ago. We had a few frags/colonies start bleaching from the bottom up, but all water params looked just fine. Then the bleaching from the bottom gradually spread to a total of about 10 of our acros (we have over 100 frags/colonies - mostly acros - in our 155 gallon tank). Some lost flesh at a quick rate, others, like the stags, seemed to go more slowly, but always starting from the bottom up. Didn't seem to affect many of our milli's, maybe they were too 'fuzzy' with polyps - I've read that they prefer the smooth acros. The very first to show signs were a couple of our tri-color frags and our purple bali.

After a few days of being puzzled we deciced to pull out one of the worst looking frags and take it to my husband's work where he has a stereoscopic microscope -- it freaked me out to see a bunch white oval shapes wriggling around - I wanted to dash right home and do something, anything!! There were so many, and these were TINY, we can see red bugs easily, but we absolutely COULD NOT see these with the naked eye, and even with the magnifying glass they were extremely difficult to see even when we knew what we were looking for. These were clear and/or white and still hanging out on the bleached areas as well as at the edges of the flesh. I throught they were bigger, but the egg clusters we spotted sure looked exactly like the photos that were posted.

We pulled out all frags & colonies showing signs and treated with fluke tabs in dosage recommended on a reef central AEFW thread. (Basically 1 tab in a few gallons of salt water, dip for at least 20 minutes, then blast with powerhead and scrub areas where we'd spotted egg clusters with a soft toothbrush). We borrowed a digital microscope and have been regularly checking the previously affected frags. We redipped all frags about every 5 days for a couple more doses just in case any eggs had hatched, tho' we had checked closely with the digital microscope for eggs and removed all we saw with soft toothbrush (they were on the bleached areas, usually on the under side or in the fork of a branch).

We seem to have the upper hand, I think the key is to catch it early and repeatedly dip affected frags in case any eggs do manage to hatch. Haven't seen any additional bleaching since our repeated dips several weeks ago and no other frags with signs of infestation. Some folks claim there could be eggs on rocks that would hatch, but so far (knock on wood) we haven't seen any signs of a reinfestation. Of course, we are still keeping an eagle eye on the bases of all of our corals.

PS -- one more note...

We do have a dense birdnest colony that has been losing color on the bottom for a long time (probably at least 4 months), but I believe this is due to the density and size of the colony - we've looked it over closely and seen no signs of AEFW. It's lost color down towards the center of the colony too, but it's been doing this for many months and hastn' bleached pure white or as quickly as the ones that were infected with the AEFW.

I've tried to find a source to purchase the 'hitchhiker' acro crabs I've gotten on occasion, but have had no success. The large colonies I have that do have the acro crabs seem to do better since the detritivore is kept cleaned out. Guess maybe I should get in there and blast with the turkey baster more often.

Keeping fingers crossed...

Thanks! I hope things keep doing okay. So, I learn from my mistakes, and have purchased a quarantine tank (no new frags until it's set up). The frags you gave us stayed healthy and look great.

The timing was bad since we were within 6 weeks of closing on the new house and had just given our landlord notice. The poor woman was showing the rental to potential renters with most of the kitchen looking like a mad scientist's laboratory.

We're at the new house now - moved the 155 gallon tank this past weekend, temporarily set it back up since the 269 gallon isn't ready. :( We did get our separate frag system up and running last week since I didn't want to try to cram and re-anchor everything back in the 155. Nate's working on the new tank plumbing (having a demo on drilling the sump at our MCSAC meeting tomorrow), should have the tank running in another 3 weeks. Are you and Sherman ready for a road trip to the east side yet ???? We have extra room now and Nate still has a couple bottles of some good Port waiting for someone to help him.

We'll even get some landscaping in a couple weeks so might be able to keep the sand dunes off the back porch. You think I'm joking? NOT ! I've decided to just leave them there since shoveling and blowing them off with the leaf blower just seems to tempt the wind gods to come back and deposit more. Guess that's what we get for being the first house on the street to be completed. Other than living in a sand box with typical spring winds we're loving the new place, I'm just impatient to get the new tank up and running!

nice work.

ok so many many wather changes and pretty much all back to normal .. my duncans are closed going on 2 months now.. but everythign else is doing good.. i have 2 sps that on the tips are soem red alge i cant get rid of and my aiptasia problem is getting bigger.. i need some of those nudi's bergia i think.... anyone local have any???? Thanks for all the replay ppl....

that's very nice. I still don't knoiw why they checked out though, and Sherman has plenty. Historically speaking I have had a hard time with LPS so it is not a total surprise, but they seemed liek they were doing great, eating well etc. and then toast.

BTW, I still have those friggin' Rubbermaids here for you!
