Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Go to www.windywillys.com They have many choices, variable speed and temp. control fans. Good prices and no charge for shipping. I bought 2 120mm variable speed fans for $43 and are very quiet...

Good Luck with your tank

Again GARF does it with success, but they have the luxury of a research facility and scientist to make it happen. And yes there others out there doing the same.

They are a research facility Yes, But they cover Wetlands, Geothermic heating, as well as tanks.
I would say this statement is more true, "They have the luxury of years of reefkeeping that they can draw on." More so then a dedicated scientist gawking constantly at tanks taking measurements. I beleive you have the wrong Idea about GARF in general.

Ron, I can assure you you will be very happy with the results you'll see in the sps corals overall health, color and growth.

No not really, I do understand that their research is much more than tanks. I've been on their site numerous times and read till my eyes blead.

The deal here is that if your going to have an sps "dominated" tank that vho's are not going to cut. Especially in a tank 24" deep. Vho's do not have the ability to punch thru to the bottom half of a tank that deep. They have the ability to supply the light for any lps or softy and yes they might keep some acros going. That's not what we really want in this hobby is it? For them to just survive? No, we want them to thrive, grow and have the best coloring achievable. That's the attraction, the beauty of acro/sps.

I think in Ron J's case being he's new to sps keeping he would benefit by going the best route he can so that later down the road he won't be frustrated or sorry he didn't go with the best possible methods.

When I get my 180 up and running odds are I'll use vho or t5, but more for supplemental purposes, dusk- dawn, and or color. But watt for watt there is no comparison between vho and MH.

That's my .02, I'm done

Sometimes people present nice packages but leave out enough information that isn't considered vital for their purpose but behind the scenes there is a lot more going on. I would suggest trying these methods as I have previously should be left up the the well experienced & the ones that can afford to experiment under controlled conditions. The fact is your success rate is better using certain tried & true methods, we sometimes preach that here because the majority of the site members are here & doing their reefs based on the help we give. We could argue & prove points either way until we're blue but still all in all we basically agree on the proven methods for higher successes, so with that in mind lets let Ron use this information provided to move to the next level & start a new sps reef tank & leave the discussion for the advanced forums & please feel free anytime to start new threads & discussions there. I know lighting is a very interesting subject & we can all learn from experience & information provided.
thanks.

i totally agree with Scooter dood :) .

I use twenty 65w par56 floods...seem to great growth on the algae...jk

I have only 2ea 100w VHO's on my 55. One 50/50 and one actinic white. I dont think its nearly enough but I do have some monti cap thats growing like crazy. On my 180 I was planning on having 4 ea 100w VHO actinics and 2-3 250w MH's ...oh and I agree with anything the scootmiester says
