Stand modification question

I have a really quick question on modifying my current stand. I broke down the 90 gallon and put everything in a 40 breeder to hold it while we were getting the floors redone. Now that it's apart I've added a few more inches to the stand (it'll get sanded and everything painted black to help blend in) but I was wondering if I can drill a larger opening where the holes are to help plumbing without compromising the stand? It doesn't appear that the structure would be impacted by drilling a larger opening but it never hurts to check with wiser people. I was thinking about cutting out around the holes, approx the red box.
If I'm totally off base please stop me now before I need a new stand.:smash:
