so, the overflow on the fuge i'm water testing sucks air, almost like its breathing.. i don't have an emergency drain on it. do i need to be more afraid of not having an emergency drain ;if i add a durso the the bare stand pipe?

If you can add a back up, do so. It will be worth while at some point. Your floor will thank you. J
not sure i can... i mean, i know i can drill, or get another hole drilled.. but the overflow is tiny so i'm not sure where i would add it.
is it in anyway feasible to run an overflow box as an emergency drain? i mean, it seems its better than nothing, but it just might be actually nothing.

There is always a way, just depends on what you are willing to do. I don't know what tank your talking about, glass, or acrylic. When someone comes to me for a build, I insist on at least 1 primary drain, and one back up. Nobody has come back saying they wanted their money back for a bulkhead and a few dollars worth of PVC. I have a 75 gallon that will be at a trade show, and I practice what I preach, 2 small OFB's, dual 1" primary drains, with 1 back up 1" drain. We will be looking at about 500 gph, and will have a Herbie (Gregory) style gate valve set up.
I'd say drain it if you have to, and get it dialed in plumbing wise. Like I said, it is up to what your willing to do. J

So I think I really need to get an emergency drain drilled. Anyone have links or pictures to some 'low profile' drains that aren't enclosed in an overflow box? I really don't want to change out the one that is in there, and since its just a small display fuge, I'm not terribly worried about the look of it. I was hoping to do something like just an upturned U pretty high in the tank, but I haven't really researched it out yet as to whether it would really drain correctly that way.
dropped the tank off at OBD tonight to get drilled. Hoping it will make it through the process as drilling glass that thin is always at least somewhat questionable. Having the emergency drain is going to make me a lot more comfortable when running it.
decided not to baffle it. i can add them if i need them, but i'm doing fine without baffles currently, and since what i'm really going for with the sump is added volume (your can see the fuge clearly on top of the stand) i'm going to hold off. if i find the bubbles are too much, i can glue a bubble trap in pretty quckly...
