So I am not necessarily new to reef keeping but i am new to the smaller tank size after downsizing from a 180. I have a 29 gallon that i migrated some of my rock and mushrooms and things into from y=my big tank and my question is? I did not use any mechanical filtration in my big tank since i had over 200 lbs of live rock. i have about 40 pounds of live rock in my 29 gallon and a bak pak filter skimmer. do i need to run mechanical filtration such as the flosh that came with the bak pak or can i let the rock do it like i did for my large tank? i am planning on a reef tank and only a light stock of fish. I am planning on adding a fuge but have never had one of those either. i have done a little research and think i will just need the fuge, some mud and some cheato? thanks for any help

I would pull out the floss and discard it. There is a thread by SkimmerWhisperer on mesh-modding and building a new valute for the CPR bakpak2 - a highly recommended read.

When my 29 was running I used the modded CPR skimmer, rock, and a hang on back filter(aquaclear 50) that ran full time, however I only employed carbon in the hang on back filter for a few days each month. If you use a hang on back fuge, I'm sure there will be a place to set a bag of carbon if you wish to use it. Top off was controlled using the drip method. Flow was provided by one MJ400 with a sureflow kit.

Had I wanted to run the tank longer, my next step would have been to add a hang on back fuge using cheeto only with a reverse photoperiod. This method has worked well for me on other tanks. My tank was very successfull... I'm hope yours will be too. :)

thanks logiktest. i appreciate the advice. I have since aquired a small 3 chambered sump with skimmer and a hang on tank refugium. I was going to have the refugium lit with the same fixture that is on my tank since the refugium is going to hang on the side and the light fixture will hang over by about 6 inches. I am just tackling the getting water from the tank to the sump issue next. Thanks for all your help.
