Ive been reading that I should keep a powerhead and heater in my freshly mixed saltwater. I mix about 15 gal at a time and use about 1/2 of that for my water change each week. Do I need to keep the powerhead and heater running all week? Or can I turn it on the day before the change?
I mix the fresh batch a day before the change.

if i have saltwater sitting waiting for a water change i keep the heater in it with the power head so keep the water from getting stagnant

I mix enough to do 2 water changes. So the mixed saltwater will only be in storage 2 weeks at the most. I dont think that is enough time for it to stagnate. Is it?

I just use a powerhead in my mix bucket, I make 4 gallons a time. My house does stay hotter then most folks places. The ambient temperatur in my house is between 73 and 75 even in the winter, lots of reptiles here. If I didn't have the high house heat I would use a heater, but as it stands now a two degree diffference from the salt bucket to the tank isn't that big a deal.

im not a big fan of pre mixing... as i always have 50g of fresh RODI water at temp ready to mix...

two level cups of tropic marin salt and a home depot bucket... fill to the line where the plastic lip is mix with a drill and long kent glass srapper... i can do a 40g water change at any giveing moment in about 20 min or less

I use a 10gallon tank with a heater and powerhead. I usually keep it on. Not everyone likes to keep it at the ready, but I do because the salinity reading changes with temperature, unless you're using a compensating refractometer. For me, keeping it the same temp as the tank is easier to ensure accurate salinity levels. Also, I personally like letting it circulate and 'age' a bit so it isn't cloudy when I add new water. It can take awhile for a heater to warm up your water, so for me it's just easier to keep it at the ready.

If you want to keep it at the ready, you can just turn it on the day before the change, up to you...
