Argh, my heater was stuck on last night and this morning my tank is at 87 degree!

I unplugged the heater and put in a small ice pack in it. Would it coll the tank down too fast? (60 gallon)

How bad is this? Normal temp is 80

nod. I noticed the temp is coming down faster than I'd like, so I removed the ice pack soon after.

Never use old heater, time to buy 2 smaller good ones too :(

Any suggestion on a good brand?

also you may want to buy a heater controller so you have 2 redudant ways to control the heater. set the controller at the temperature you want to keep your tank at and set your heater at 2 degrees or so higher.

I use the Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper as my heater controller. It also controls my lights, my fan, my pumps, etc.

There are cheaper alternatives though.

I love the Ebo Jager heaters. They rarely fail. I know yours was a Ebo. It happens just not as often with them. Matt has the right idea.

I've had several dozen Ebo-Jagers over the years, and I've only had one fail on me. Fortunately in that case it just quit working. I've had horrible problems with titanium heaters. Actually the heaters work fine, it's the cheap thermostats that come with them. I like to use either multiple small Ebo-Jagers with a controller like Mattseattle said, or a titanium with the same controller. It pays in the long run to spend some money on a good controller. After a titanium heater went out a few years ago I had an African Cichlid tank drop below 70, which was a good reminder of why to keep an eye on the temperature often.

Hope everything works out,
Clayton

Well, good news is that all livestocks recovered nicely.

However I noticed my sump is messed up and my water level is much lower than it is suppose to be, so half on the heater is exposed to air. That may have broke the heater :(
