Hi Everyone,

A few questions on my new Maxima's. I recently bought two Maxima's through the Internet. They both arrived great, shipped well and acclimated fine. Put them in our 72 under Tek 6bulb T-5 fixture about halfway up in a plastic dish. This evening (6th day we have had them)it looked like some spider webbing was on them. Not a lot but enough to be noticeable. I took them out in the dish and gave them a good scrub (they are both about 2 to 2 1/2 inches. The webbing had some spots in it but did not look like eggs or anything. I put some sand in the bottom of the dish this time and put them back in the same spot in the tank. One of them has a hard feather duster tube on its shell but have not seen it come out at all. Should this be removed???

We have three other clams in the tank which do fine. A Dersa, Squammie and a Crocea. Never seen this web like substance on any of the other three..

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Sounds to me like a vermetid snail. They are harmless but send out goo to trap food. That is probably what you are thinking is the feather duster.

Can you post a pic?

Does the snail have a tube like a feather duster that is attached to the clam shell????? This morning there was just a string out of its tube.... The current kept it away from the clam..

Will post a couple of pics this evening.

Thanks
Mike

i have a tube worm just like that that puts out a gooey web. the tube is 1/2 inch long by 1/16 in dia. the sticky stuff goes with the current

Yes the vermetid snails have shells like a featherdusters.

I take a frag shears or even a regular old plyers and smash the shell. I would rather look at the clams than a snot web. The fish in the tank enjoy eating the snail as well.

Just be sure if you do this that you don't break the clams actuall shell.
