My tank has a decorative wood trim around the bottom and top whith I was wanting to take off. Is there any reason as to why I shouldn't do this? It doesn't look like it contributes any to strength or the seal. Could I just take it off with a razor?

what size tank is it that trim in most cases does indeed contribute to the strength of the spanned glass on larger tanks and prevents bowing of the glass.

It is an 80 gal 18X48X21. The stand I am building can be made with one less piece of plywood (savings of $24.00) If I can remove it. It makes the tank 7/16 of an inch too long. There will be 3/4 in plywood supporting it from the stand the same height as the trim is now.

I wouldnt risk it man! That stuffs pretty rigid. I bet it helps somewhat.

Dieden- I would be inclined to spend the $24 and ensure structural integrity if I were you....
your carpet cleaining bill (if/when it fails) will be far larger :(

If you don't like the wood print, use laquer thinner and elbow grease to remove it.

Leave the plastic trim. It does indeed provide necessary support to keep the tank together.
$24 is only the cost of one small coral form the LFS. The corals you can afford will grow in to fill the spot from the one missing coral.

It's a structural necessity. The trim on the top too. You don't want to even start calculating the bills from 80 gallons of saltwater damage.

kurt nelson ?not the owner of nelsons towing is it !
And yes i agree the trim is to provide the glass a place to rest when flexing..But if u feel the need to remove it go get some glass cut for the corners and for another brace and for the bottom and for the bottom corners ect. ect. get my drift!!!!Check out all the pics at www.glasscages.com this will help more thanks ,will

If it wood as you stated and not plastic its probably not supporting the tank. Thin wood just stuck to the outside of the tank is not for support. If its a plastic frame like on an aga aquarium it needs to be there. If your concerned you can remove it and use the stand trim piece as its replacement.

Ya, its not a frame, just a 1/4X1 1/4 inch piece of decoration. it doesn't extend underneath the tank either, just sits on the side.

Then your fine to just peal it off. Recess the tank in the stand trim sot that it is a tight fit and you should be good. 1/4 wood trim with mitered corners is not going to provide any support any ways so using the stand it will be even stronger.

Has anyone ever takin the trim off a 40g or a 20g? I would like to do this to a frag tank. What does everyone think.
