Is it normal to have the tank temperature varies from day and night? How much is the acceptable range if it is?

My tank temperature goes up when MH is on and drop when it is off. I don't think I can keep it from happening unless use a chiller.

Thanks a lot.

How much does it vary. I try to shoot for one degree or less. If you have a sump you can put a quality clip fan to blow on it only when the lights are on. That helps some. Or you could just go crazy and get a proportional controller and run a chiller and heater thru it. LOL I wish I had that kind of cash. HTH Steve

Joyce - what temperature range are you seeing?

Joyce, my temp will swing 3-4 degrees in a day, and I haven't seen any really bad effects. As long as my temp doesn't go over 82, I am fine. Fans on the sump are a good idea Steve, it shows that goat is still thinking properly!! :D

I tried to keep it around 80, and it goes up to 84 or so by the later part of the day cycle. Actually it depends on where the thermometer is. If it is in the sump that it is 1-2 degree cooler, but if it is in the tank then it is 84-85.

It is not as bad as I thought. I woke up this morning the tank was 79, turned on MH around noon, and now 6pm it is at 81.5

So is fluctuation of o temperature of 3-4 degrees from day to night acceptable? Do I have to do something about it?

Joyce - IMO, 84-85 is a little on the high side, especially since it is winter right now. My tank gets hotter in the summer, and I had to put 2 fans on in the sump. Have you tried adding a fan to blow on the sump while the MH lights are on? It may help keep your temperature swing from going so high.

I would try and stay away for the 85 range. a degree or two up and you can see problems. I would start at 78 if I were you

Yea, I think 85 is high too. so is 78-82 variation ok then?

I think something is wrong with my heater also, even at 82 or so I'd still see in come on periodically, yet without MH temperature still stayed below 80 and the heater is not on all the time either.

I'll try a different one
