Testing ORP probes with Iodine

Something I picked up on from ENC.

Pick up a std 2 ounce bottle of Tincture of Iodine (USP Grade) and dilute it with 473 mL of RO/DI water. After thoroughly mixed, place enough in a small container to check the probe. It should read between +440 and +455 mV. If it does not you have a probe issue, either dirty or it needs to be replaced.

Boomer, if I didn't want to make up 473ml of the solution ... say 50ml ... what proportions should I mix?

Does that solution have any shelf life? Or is it best to get rid of it within a few days?

Well, 2 fld oz = 59.14705913 mL Iodine Tincture

59.1471 mL / 473 mL = 0.125047 mL Iodine Tincture / mL of water

50mL x 0.125047mL = 6.252 mL Iodine Tincture / 50 mL water

I would make up a new bach each time I use it.

ORP, conductivity, disolved oxygen

hi, should i monitor ORP (what is that), conductivity, disolved oxygen for a 120gal reef tank? the answer will tell me if i should spend 299 or 499 on a neptune controller

You do not need to monitor ORP unless you are using Ozone. However, if you did use one without Ozone it would teach you a few thing on ORP and why and how it shifts the ORP when you do things. ORP = Oxygen Reduction Potential.

conductivity = The salinity of the tank. A value of 53 mS = 35 ppt = 1.0264

dissolved oxygen= Not needed but if one has money to spend it is a nice toy.
