hey everyone,
I've seen and participated in several threads lately about the importance of QT'ing new livestock for the tank. I have also recently just eradicated the dreaded RedBugs from my tank.

Today I received 3 small coral frags and one Derasa Clam from a reputable online vendor, (not one of our sponsors), who informed me :

we treat all of our systems every 3-4 months for red bugs even if they show no signs of red bugs...

Since I'm a naturally suspicious person, (okay, so I'm a cop...gimme a break), I plopped them all in a 10 gallon QT tank I had set up, and dosed with Interceptor.

Less than 5 minutes after I put them all in the tank, I noticed 3-4 redbugs crawling around the one Acro I just received, (the other 2 corals were a Hydnophora, and a Seritopora hystrix).

So the moral of this story is DONT EVER ADD ANYTHING TO YOUR TANK, UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO INFEST YOUR TANK WITH SOME SORT OF PARASITE OR DISEASE...EVEN IF THE PERSON/STORE SAY'S THEY ARE TREATING FOR PARASITES!

I dodged a bullet here...this could have been really annoying...

I've informed the vendor about the bugs, not to be obnoxious or angle for a freebie of anything, but just to make them aware of the situation. I'm not going to post up the name of the vendor, because I want to see what they have to say about the whole thing....

Honestly, I would still order from them, but I've definately proven that a QT tank is a necessity....

So be careful out there folks....its your tank and your livestock (and your money) your risking by not QT'ing.

Wow - Nick - good thing you had the tank up and ready. I also did the same recently. I'm sure the vendor will appreciate being told. I certainly would inform them, if I were in the same boat. What they do with the information is up to them, but at least you made the effort. When it comes to red bugs, I don't think I'll take anyone's word for it....these things are so darn small. It would be very easy to miss one or two with a brood pouch. I have a pretty good magnifying glass I use post QT to make sure all is well.

Let us know how they respond.

Yea as this hobby continues to progress and more and more folks trade and propagate corals, and truly bring in so many from the wild its just a matter of natural progression for more and more pests and such to become more previlant. Myself I give away alot of frags but rarely took any in, but even being stingy like that I still got all of the above. Its to the point now where a QT tank is a must

After a problem with my Sohal Tang I guess for me QT becomes a rule. It makes solving parasites or diseases much easier. I can't imagine to have this problem in my display tank because of not having it pass the QT. It would have been a disaster.
An added bonus is that you get to know you fish individually, get them accustom to their new food and environment, and you get to learn.
