What do you do when you have a bicolor blenny that likes to eat SPS in a SPS tank? Buy a nano cube! I couldn't part with my beloved Humphrey the SPS eating Bicolor Blenny, nor could my 3 year old daughter (he is way too colorful, and healthy). We decided to set me up, oops, I mean her up a nano cube. We ordered the 12 gallon Nano Cube Deluxe from Reef Supply, and she is going to keep softies and a few small LPS.
What 3 year old doesn't love sand?? I added 20 pounds of sand and about 10 pounds of Pukani live rock from the refugium of the big tank (I'm guessing on the weight...it was 4 smaller pieces). I made a little eggcrate table to raise the rock off the sand a bit. The water is about 75% from my tank, and 25% freshly mixed ASW.
The tank is now just over 2 weeks old, and I have introduced a few zoanthids. These were from some I had in the big tank, that kept blowing under a rock, so they either needed to make it in the nano, or disappear in the big tank. Cyano bloom has come and gone. Currently, there are 2 Nassarius snails, 2 Trochus, and 1 fighting conch (which was quickly named Jasmine). I don't have any other filtration on it (besides the rock), but did purchase another powerhead. I am also considering adding a small skimmer.
My princess has duties she must perform daily. She has to check her livestock, and check the ammonia alert for a color change (easiest test I could think of for a 3 year old). Also, prior to bed time (for her and the tank), she has to check everything again. This has been fun for me because she is really excited about having this tank to herself.....even though I get to play with it, too.
