Is the use of mirrors in the Canopy a good idea or bad idea will it magnify to much? that are the pros and cons of Mirriors?
Darrell

well i have access to some mirror thought about using it

Are these glass mirrors? if so, then the weight is a con. Also the fact that they are breakable is another con.

Like Brad said white paint will reflect just about as well, so there is a plus for you...it's just slightly better than white paint.

I don't see much in the way of pros, outside of the fact that you have access to them.

mirror use

Well, for what it's worth, Shilo says mirrors are great. She sits standing mirrors around the fish tank (when it was on her desk) because the fish like to look at themselves and then they aren't so lonely. Thought that's what you were talking about....

Oh to be ten!

So you don't think mirrors would have a magnifyng effect just reflecting effect
these are very thin glass and very light i don't think weight would be a problem its not like they are 1/4 in think 1/16 at the most and they can be cut and opoxied to the inside of the canopy i held one up witch is 46in x12in infront and it lit up all my shadowed areas
i was just worried about Magnifing and burning or bleaching my prize SPS's

A mirror is not a lens, it won't magnify the light appreciably. The net result should be not much different than using a highly polished reflector.

If you think it looks better, by all means use them. =)

I thought about using reflective mylar (TAP plastic in bellevue has them)

Seems better than foil and might be easier to work with than glass

Just be careful Siegfried and Roy dont show up and try to hide a tiger in your tank. LOL Only possible down side I see. Usually MH bulbs are closer to the canopy top than the cover glass if any. I think that the shield glass on some housings is pyrex, it would be really bad if one day while your at work, the glass heated up unevenly enough to crack and fall into the tank, Its flat so it would slip through the water easy with good speed and possibly crack the glass or cut a coral of fish. If you are certain by expoxy gluing you can protect against that I would try it. Heck it may be the next reefing trend. LOL Steve
