I know I have seen a few threads on this before, but cant find them now!

I have three different ones and of course they all read something different.
The digital one I got back in October of last year seems to be off about 8 degrees. The old fashioned glass tube one I think is more accurate. But I wonder.
What does everyone use/like the best?

The reason I was questioning the corallife one, was that when I moved all my fish/rock ect from my 29 gal to the 75 I had trouble getting the temp up. The coralife one seemed to read wrong. I checked it with a bowl of water I put in the freezer thinking that if it was just freezing over the top of the bowl it should read about 32 or so. It read 27 with just a skift of ice over half of the bowl. Maybe my logic is flawed eh?

You could leave your thermometers out on the table if you have a thermostat that shows you the temp in your house. Whichever reads closest to that is the one I'd go with. Generally, the glass thermometers seem to be the closest for whatever reason.

I'll have to try the suggestions and see what seems to be more accurate.
Scary! Especially since in the smaller tank the digital one read 78, if it was off 8 degrees it would make that tank actually 86
I guess I don't know what to think! I dont think you can adjust the digital ones, or at least the cheap one I have!

As Adam said, if your thermometer reads down to 32 degrees, you can check it by temping a glass of ice water. Not just ice, has to be ice water. I used to be a chef and we'd calibrate our thermometers every day, using ice water and boiling water. Ice water will measure 32 degrees, and boiling water, right at the point of boiling, will read 212. The boiling method varies slightly at extremes in altitude, but for you, it'll work just fine.

Ah good to know! I tried the ice water.. the glass probe one read 34 after being in it for 15 mins..
the digital was about 8 degress cooler.. so not accurate..
I dont think you can calabrate them (the digital ones)
