240 Gallon Sump and Refugium

Hey Everyone,

I'm pretty jazzed this morning! Dave B and I ran some errands yesterday. We picked up a bunch of plumbing supplies from HD and we picked up this beast!

It's my 240g Sump/Refugium. There is a black acrylic seperator 1/2 way in the tank that makes a 120g sump on one side and a 120g refugium on the other.

Progress!

cya,

Ted

Man Ted its lokking like its going to be a really clean and tight setup. The LR was a huge score, its going to make the aquascaping so easy.

Hmm it might be time for a quick tour down in cali, lol

I know you have some great help with this project, but I'm curious about how you will be doing the closed loop, (if any), and circulation of this tank. I would love to have a 4x4x2 cube, and have thought about plumbing and water movement for it and decided thats its difficult and complicated at best.
Any hints or ideas?

It's nice to have accomplished reefers as friends. Dave and Scott have been tremendous.

I'm not running a closed loop. Circulatoin will be from 1 Sequence Barracuda, 2x6200 and 4x6100 Tunze Streams. I have an extra pair of 6000s I may use also.

HTH,

Ted

Ted,
Thats kinda what I kept coming back to as well, unless I went with a center overflow and ran returns from an OM unit from the overflow as well in addition to the streams.....and that would make maintainance a PITA.

Nick

Yes and No. It depends on the application.
I really like my OM unit, (actually like it better than I would have liked a Motorized Ball Valve). Its got its good points and its less desirable points. There are things I would do differently in my system were I starting this over again. But no, I'm not preferring the Streams over what I currently have.
Ideally, I could use both. I just think it requires some planning for water movement in a cube tank, that you wouldnt have to account for in a standard rectangular tank.

Hope that makes sense.

Nick

There are always pluses and minuses with each method for adding flow. I don't like "powerheads" to be visible. As long as I can hide the streams and still be able to service them easily, I will be happy. Obviously, I think I can or I wouldn't have invested all of the $$$.

I have one running over two years now, I think one thing I need to do to it is get the magnetic holder for it, other than that I think is has some great advantages, If it was me I might skip the MBV, the OM & install a well jetted CL in addition to the streams, simple but effective, works well for me. Maxx what you don't like about the OM, just your thoughts?
Oh yea, having those big Stream heads on each end is just as easy to swallow as a BB tank, It doesn't affect the looks that much, either that or I just got used to it.

There is actually nothing that I dont like about the OM. I now wish I had done some things differently with my closed loop plumbing but those are relatively minor issues that can easily be blamed on the fact that I'd never done this before. The Om unit is great and works very well. I still reccomend it to people.

Update - A lot has happened since end of March!

Ok. Let's catch up! Since the last postings, I have had a cr@p load of help from o2manyfish (Dave Botwin) in getting this system up and running.

The start of the still incomplete cabinet work.

So we plumb part of the system and test it for leaks

Then we work the outside plumbing in earnest

And then test that for leaks

So we add the tank to the plumbing and test it for leaks
