I just set up my tank and did not put any heaters in at all. No lights yet, nothing just water sand and pump running the sump and skimmer.

My tank is at 80 and it is not even summer yet!!!!!

Do I have to get a chiller or are there other ways to cool down a tank that are proven to work.

I have a 60 gallon tank!

Thanks

Start with fans first to 50 cfm fans one at each in of the tank blowing in .

It is really based on where it is located. If you are in a room that gets warm in the summer than worry. I personally would look into buying a window AC unit because It can cost less than a chiller.

Well, I do have central air! I guess it needs to run full time in the dead of summer than.

idgy - I have a 6" and 4" fan blowing on my sump. I found my air conditioning needs to be set about 72-74ºF, in order to keep the tank temp from raising above 82ºF. I have more heat problems on cooler summer days when the air isn't running as often. I finally broke down and purchased a chiller though. You will probably have to play it by ear and see what happens when you add lights. It may not make that much of a difference, or not anything significant that a fan won't take care of. Are you planning on MH lighting?

Here is a thread for you: Cheapskate Chilling Techniques.

Hope this helps!

No MH lights just your regular flourecent lights with built in fans! My tank has a canopy with the back open to let air in.
