Hey everyone,

Just wanted to get some input on whether or not it's possible to get TOO MUCH flow and if so what are some indications. I just finished setting up an AGA 16 gallon bowfront and have the returns coming back from the sump via a scwd and a quiet one 4 something or other. Also I have a closed loop setup with a pondmaster 950 through 1/2 inch locline. The tank hasn't cleared up yet (it's only been running a couple hours). Have no idea how much total flow is in there but I'm guessing a lot. Would love to know what you all think.

I guess you have too much flow when your sand never settles and blows everywhere continuously. Other than that, I don't know of any other indications. I guess another thing would be what you plan on keeping in the tank. Some things require crazy flow while others not so much. I have over 4,000 gph in my 75 and may put more(LOL)

Ok...........how do you determine how many GPH you have??? Or is it just an estimate based on the types of pumps you have??? There is minimal sand displacement and what there is will be reduced by aquascaping and nozzle adjustment. Not sure what i'm going to put in here yet.

When the live rock starts to fluidize you have to much flow. I think your fine.

Don

LOL...well I think the rock is still solid so I must be ok.

Using the head loss calculator you can determine how many gallons per hour you have. But in my opinion, if you sand stays on the bottom and the corals stay where you put them ( you may have to glue the smaller ones down), strong flow is good.

Ok using that calculator I have an estimated 1102 GPH of flow is this tank. Tha's assuming a 25% reduction on the return because of the SCWD. That's actually more flow per gallon Krish than you have in your 75....Better add some more LOL.
