Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Hey folks if you are dying to get ahold of reefers while the site is down. Check out or chatroom on the afterX irc network.

i'd look for another server company then if this is the type of support you are already receiving. what is it going to be like when you have 'real' problems and need 'real' support?

not to start a flame or any issues but it is a concern.

You know RC did that, and ever since they did it sure has turned the site into on of the most frustrting places to go, the server is always busy and the board seems to go down quite a bit

I personally don't want the headache of having my own server. I certainly don't have a T1 line in my home and don't expect to in the near future :) I like the idea of calling on the server provider for help as required too. We are definately taking the right steps the way we are going I think ....

I agree, a managed site will provide more consistency of operations, it is hard for one person alone to manage a site alone, 24/7, can be done but not with great results. In the long term it would also be more cost effective, upgrading, backing up etc. & operating overhead.

3mb upstream and downstream? or just downstream? i have a 3 mb downstream but not upstream. plus i wouldn't want to host a server on a home machine because you only have one way to the backbone. most hosting systems have several ways to different backbones in case one is down or conjested.

Many server companies will over subscribe their lines. They will offer great deals and get tons of people to buy into it, but the line only supports so many lines, so they will over subscribe it. It's a really #@(# up deal on how many ISP's do that now-a-days.

I offered a while ago to host RF.com, since my personal server is sitting on a 100Mbps pipe in my company's datacenter.

I don't think I have space for another dedicated server though, which means back to a semi-shared hosting solution. Its a fairly beefy and very well-maintained box however that's been reliably running several other community boards for a while with no issues.
