While making my skimmer I've tried a few different venturis (geo disc and 4 commercial) all pulled 1psi vac, not very much.
So I decided to make one that really works 12psi vac! Fits in standard pvc fitting.

Ok, I'm interested. How does it compare to a Mazzei 784 with a Dolphin DP-1200 pump ( approx 800 gph @ 12' head)? How did you make it? Details?

Compared to the Mazzei, beats me. Didnt they stop making those? Its for my new needle wheel skimmer. Solid cast acrylic rod tuned down on the lathe to fit pvc fittings. Drilled with tapperd bit from 7/8 down to 3/8 on both ends. Easy takes about 10 minute ,no nipple to break and easy to clean. I tested on a Dolphin DP900 with an automotive vac transducer.

They have definitely not stopped making the Mazzei. Those injectors are used for more uses than I would even try to list. Also, if its used for feeding a needlewheel then its an "eductor" type more so than a true venturi. The needlewheel does the mixing and the "venturi" is not nearly as important as it is in "Beckett" or other models that are much more dependent on flow rates and pump pressure. I think the Oceanrunner line of pumps may be more to your liking as they are competetive in pricing to the Dolphins and no additional parts or venturis are needed. They also come with true needlewheel impellors.

Very cool I just looked at their web site and my venturi works exactly the same way (twin oposing funnels). I am using the Ocean runner for the skimmer, dolphin was for testing. The ocean runner, sedra or what ever need the venturi. Needle wheel or not the venturi bring in air. The needle chops the water and mixes the air. Produces very fine bubble. I'm no engineer but it works. You could easily install in line with cheap pvc connectors.

What kind of Oceanrunner are you you using? I have done some testing with the 2700 but I'm not sure if it has the output I'm looking for.

That sure is a compact design and I like that!!! It also looks really cool. Have you tried using it as a venturi? Also, what type of Oceanrunner is that? Did you try using the eductor that came with the Oceanrunner? It measures 1.675" in length.

I tested it as a in line venturi on the dolphin, pulls alot of air in. The Ocean Runner is a 2700 kit made for the turbofloater. It came with nothing in the way of educator or venturi. What you see is what you get.
The idea is a powerful efficient skimmer without a huge pump and power consumption.

I see. They come with an efficient eductor if you order the 2700 or 3700 model now. I agree on the efficiency of the design and am currently exploring a skimmer utilizing one or more of these pumps both the 2700 and the 3700. I love the idea of a recirculating needlewheel to increase air volume and contact time.

Thats odd I just got this one new. I do have a aquamedic venturi its one of the four I tried with poor results. Euro reef does it, I dont see why you cant use two. Two would be one huge skimmer.

Ive heard of people putting educators on their returns. What do you think about turning one down to fit a return pipe?

Don

That is odd that you didnt get the air eductor. I'm an Aquamedic distributor and the 2700 is suppose to come with all fittings. Funny though if it coming incomplete resulted in you making a better one though!!

They are suppose to increase water flow and decrease the pressure right after the outlet. I gather that they pull water in from the area around the outlet thus increasing overall water movement. Sounds like a solid theory to me though I have not tried it myself.

That is pretty trick Don. Good job.

Sherm, I have bought 3 OR 2700's from different sources and have never recieved any eductors or venturi's.

Ok, I went back thru my paperwork and the one I have ordered is Code: 70005 Ocean Runner 1700 T 1000 Multi Pump. I also show that the 70006 Ocean Runner 2700 is suppose to come with a needlewheel as well as the 70007 Ocean Runner 3700. The way they list their pumps is kinda confusing as the 1700 I ordered before actually came in a 2500 box and came with the needlewheel !! I plan on doing more research and building a recirculating skimmer so I'll have to get back on the horn with them and get this all straightened out.

nice work Don, i just got my 3700 OR with no fittings. I'm gonna give this a try. Where did you get that 1" solid rod? Thanks

Hate to bring this back from the dead. But I found this little mod from another website that had the link to DonW venturi. Well it seems all the attachment photos will not open. They act like they're going to open in a new window, but that new window stays blank.

Could these attached photos have been left on the old server considering this topic is so old?

Cheers,
Alex
