VOIP service?

Hey Ed,

Glad you asked! I've been very very very happy with the service the past 3 months. It's been very stable. We did have one downtime about a month ago that lasted for 3 hours. I also had a few small problems with the D-Link telephone adapter that I bought at Best Buy. On occassion if I was downloading a large file or something the download would lock up as well as the rest of the internet. I would have to reset the telephone adapter to get it to work. Also the voice mail indicator light on our phone would not light up after someone left a voicemail so days would go by and I didn't know someone left a voicemail. I called AT&T regarding these issues and they were very responsive and tried a ton of things to get it fixed. Finally they sent me a brand new telephone adapter. They actually FedEx overnighted it to me so I was impressed with that. It was the new model they use and it has fixed all the problems. The voice quality is even a tad better which I didn't think was possible. Voice quality on the D-link was better than my previous Qwest landline. With the new Centrillium model the voice quality is crystal clear. The bandwidth it uses is very minimal. You can surf the net and talk on the phone and not notice any degradation in either. The features CallVantage offers are very nice as well. I don't use most of them, of course.

As far as pricing, I actually bought the D-Link telephone adapter at Best Buy. It was 59.95 with a 60.00 rebate. I received the rebate within 4 weeks which is unheard of as far as mail in rebates go. Also after signing up I receive the sign up fee for free and a free month so that was about 55.00 or so in credits. So this month is the first month I've had to pay anything. I just paid 34.00 for a full month. It's 29.99 for the top of the line plan which is free local and long distance calls with all the features. Taxes were just a few dollars. The taxes are what impressed me the most because I was paying 16.00 - 18.00 in taxes on my Qwest line.

All in all very impressed. Customer Service / Technical Support has been top knotch. I've never had a hold time for more than a minute or two. I've found a few dead beats in the technical support department but I usually just hang up and call back and get someone else. Easier to do that than to argue with them! :)

so thumbs up from me. I haven't had to use the 911 service which is supposedly the major drawback to using VOIP.

Matt,

Thanks muchly for the input. I've been interested in hearing how you liked this service ever since this thread started back in January (guess I liked the idea of someone else being a guinea-pig for me *evil grin*). Guess now, all thats left is for me to get off my rear end, and look into getting it for myself... huh? *smile*

Well you can either sign up online at www.callvantage.att.com or go to best buy and buy a telephone adapter. If I were you I'd just signup online and they'll fedex you the equipment you need. Also you'll get a free month and all that good stuff.

Are you using cable modem or DSL? Recently Comcast upgraded all cable modem subscribers in the state to a new higher speed for the same price. Great value especially if you use VOIP (pronounced Voyp)

I just signed up from online. After reading about the problems you had until you received AT&T's adapter... I decided it was the best way to sign-up.

I'm on Comcast here also. However, even though they have claimed they were upgrading to 4K service, when I go to www.dslreports.com... I'm still at a 3K download / 256 upload speed. Thats still much better than DSL, and definately flys past a dialup... so all is good. *Grinz*

did you power cycle your cable modem? unplug it and let it sit for about a minute then plug it back in. it has to download a new configuration file. try that if you haven't yet.

I didn't go out and buy an adapter like you did... just waiting for AT&T to send me theirs, and do it right the 1st time. Just signed up, and received the confirmation E-mail.

i was referring to the new comcast speed. you said you were still getting the old speed. did you unplug and replug your cable modem in?

Ahhhh... I'm following now.

No, haven't done a reset on my cable modem... but give me about 5 minutes, and I will have. Its a quick check to see if it makes any difference.

Kewl!

I went from 3050/241 to 3601/361, just by resetting! That extra 100 upload speed will make up for getting the VOIP!!!

Thanks Matt!!!!

For the first few days after installing the telephone adapter it's in *learning* mode. It monitors what your daily average bandwidth usage and then picks a setting based on that. Also if you notice there is a huge bandwidth loss when on the phone you can call AT&T to change it. I had to change mine once or twice but that was with the D-Link. With the Centillium adapter I've had neither a bandwidth issue nor a voice quality issue.

Glad I could help with your cable modem.

Let me know how you like the VOIP. Are you going to port over your old phone #? that is if you can.

I could... but I'm not going to. Incase I am not satisfied with this CallVantage service... I don't have to go thru yet another hassel to get things back to "normal". Figure I can always drop my land-line in a couple months, after I've taken care of a "Test run" on this VOIP. I'll keep ya informed once I receive their Addapter.

That is the best way to do it. Give it a month or two trial and see how you like it. You can port your number over at a later date and drop the land line.

I dropped mine after a week. Service seemed stable and I didn't care about keeping the same number. I'm not one of those people that has to have the same phone # for years. :) I like changing every once in a while just to keep telemarketers on their toes. So far with CallVantage I haven't had a single telemarketer call. I also put that number on the Do Not Call list.

Also if you don't like VOIP with CallVantage it's easy to switch over to another provider easy. All you do is switch out the telephoen adapter with one from the other provider and you are on your way. No biggie since they give them to you for free.

oh yeah - forgot to mention that VOIP is portable. If you travel you just take your telephone adapter with you and you can send/receive calls just like you are at home. Of course you have to have an internet connection.

I'm actually looking forward to a new number. The way our county over here is setup... only one city has complete "toll free" access to the rest of the county... and going with this VOIP I'll be able to have a number for there... so anyone in the county can now call me, without longdistance charges. *Grinz*

Win-Win!!!

you also can add Simple Reach phone #'s to your account which can be a phone # of any City/State that CallVantage services. You also don't have to even have a Washington phone # if you don't. One of the positive things about VOIP.

I researched the advantages back in January... when you started talking about all of that in this thread. But, like I said, I was waiting for YOU to be my guinea-pig, and give me a report after you had had it for a while. LOL

Received my CallVantage adapter lastnight... activated it... and so far, I'm impressed with the voice quality, and ease of use. Yea... do have to dial 10 digit numbers, even to call the next door neighbor... but HEY... thats what programable phones are for, with their speed dials! *grinz* Thanks for the info Matt!!!

yeah, the 10 digit dialing took me a day or so to get used to. they are working on 7 digit dialing though.

the voice quality definitely impressed me....it's better than my old Qwest landline.

glad it worked out for you. keep me up to date. i'm impressed that AT&T sent you your telephone adapter so quickly.
