Water level in tank?

We just got a G1-X Protein skimmer and a Euro-fil 125 Acrylic sump for our 60 gallon tank. Everything is hooked up and working, we just can't seem to get the water level in the tank to stay put and we have to unplug it before it overflows the tank? How do we adjust the water flow out to keep up with the water flow coming in? Any ideas? Thanks-Desiree

If a HOB overflow...what model is it?? If the tank is drilled what size is the drain pipe and how is it configured??

what size is your return pump and how is the sump set up?? pics if possible
 
Sorry-don't have any pictures yet...the Hang-On Overflow Box (800 gph)
manufactered by Eshopps The U-tube is on one side and the pvc pipe and tubed shaped foam is on the other. We have a y-shaped flow pipe-one pipe going to the uv sterilizer and one connected to one of the powerheads. Here is a link to the protein skimmer and the sump. in line ball valve

All return lines should have a way to adjust flow,and useing a t instead of a elbow on the drain,where it curves into the sump will help flow.Make sure sump is only half or a little more full.How full is your over flow box,is it over flowing befor the tank?
 
Our overflow tank does over flow before the tank. I think for tonight we are going to cap off one powerhead to see if that works until we can get a hold of the company we got it from. What do you think?
 
Sounds to me like the return pump is too big for the job. What kind of pump is it. Also, you might try removing the foam in the HOB overflow and see if that is slowing the water down. Ecobalance is right, you should put a "T" on the return pipe after the pump in order to restrict it a little if its necessary.

Is this set up on the return or the drain pipe out of the overflow? I cant for the life of me imagine how you have this set up.

Typically, A UV sterilzer is fed with its own pump, or T'd off the return pump pipe. Even direct in line with the return pump depending on its recommended flow.
A small powerhead is sometimes hooked to the U tube on the HOB overflow to help prevent losing siphon in case of a power failure.
Nothing should be tied into the drain from the overflow. It should leave the tank and go directly to the sump.

you dont need to put a T on it to restrict it unless you have another job to do with it...like power a chiller or canister filter with it.

You just need to put a ball balve on th4e output of the pump. In most cases it will use less electricity and be less wear on the pump in doing so anyway. AS long as you dont taper it back so far that you are going past the head pressure the pump can handle it is not a problem and certainly not hurting the pump.

To add to that, there is no reason to be sending any more water through your sump than you r skimmer can process anyway. the goal is to send as little unskimmed dirty water back to the tank as possible. For this reason alone you should alwasy have a ball valve on the oputput so you can make an effort to match your return flow to your skimmier processing ability. For rough guestimate, can figure your skimmer is only processing half of what the pump driving it is rated for as it is pumping air with that water.

Thanks for all your help. We put a ball valve on the pump amd everything is great. It is a little bit loud though. The owner said to maybe put something like computer mouse pads around the pump to avoid the vibrating sound we have. What tricks do you guys have with helping with the loudness? I have also read on here abount some sort of a filter (nylon stocking?) to go over the teeth of the basket to prevent any accidents. Any ideas about this? Thanks again, Desiree
