agreed, I think a good rubber-maid tube could be used to store your water & rock etc, add a ph or two & maybe a heater being it is a cold winter. If it is glass then you need to re-seam it from the sounds of what your telling us.
have you cleaned the bottom enough to make sure there are no cracks there? i bought a tank from someone who had a leak but couldnt find it and the tank had a little residue from the sand bed covering the bottom and you couldnt see the crack untill completely cleaned. it started at the hole for the overflow in the bottom of one side of the tank and went all the way to the hole on the other side of the tank. also if the leak is in the side you should cut/scrape all the silicone out and clean thoroughly and rinse well and dry completely before resealing. i clean and dry then let sit for 12 hours or more then reseal and let sit for another 24 hours minimum before refilling with fresh water for testing. wiping dry is not enough you need to air dry to evaporate any moisture film.
