What kind of circulation do you have in your tank? Heavy breathing is a sign there's not enough oxygen in the tank, which means you should increase your circulation. Put another powerhead or koralia pump and see if that helps.

If you have good circulation --- check water temp as warmer water holds less oxygen. I keep my tank @ 80-F. Also, check ammonia and nitrite ---- doubtful it is one of these in an established tank.

If all looks good --- there are many other things like gill flukes, etc.

hyposalinity for all things unknown --- in another tank of course.

With nothing to feed and grow on in the main tank 30-to-45 days will take care of the infestation if there is one.

Replace carbon at least every 60-days or if you feel like it earlier --- first use of carbon in your tank replace within two weeks.

I should add -- if you use CO2 in any form --- check your PH --- if unsure and you use CO2 stop the reactor for a day or so and see if it help the breathing.

Enjoy
