what are copyright rules and such on information

i've just been curious as to what are the copyrights on information used from books on the web, i mean i've seen quote and information from books in various posts and such,
i've been thinking this for a few reasons,
i read an article today on how google is being sued for copyright infringement for scanning many books, i think they are going for all of them (yes all the books, quite ambitious) and were having to deal with some suits
i was just thinking of making a website that collaberates a lot of information not unlike many that other hobbyists make with various information but i want to make sure that i'm not breaking any laws or what not

i was just thinking in terms of making a site, and if the hit count ever gets high enough offering advertising, but i'm sure if i ever start get money that makes things a lot more difficult,
though if i site things properly that might make things a little more ligit,
basically i'd make threads that i've read that are way too many posts for anyones good and summerize them because i think i can offer that service to many things, especially debates like BB vs DSB and offering both sides of an argument pros cons and such, most of the information i'd be using is from forums and such as i own probably only 5-10 reef books that are all at least a couple years old
