Hi MarineTang,
I have been looking at coral food options for a while. I will summerize some of the things I have found and maybe it will help you- then again maybe not but here it goes:
There are actually many available food sources that are in a particle size range that corals, including sps, can ingest. This paper (
http://jeb.biologists.org/cgi/content/full/207/9/1461) would seem to suggest that Stylophora can ingest particles up to at least the size of Artemia nauplli around 450 microns
In this paper (
http://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...d=137179&md5=1e41113e8293d65eb186507197f2bacc) Acropora, Montipora, Pocillipora, and Porities were fed small particulate matter between 10-100 microns and ingestion and incorporation of the particles was investigated. All corals ingested the particles and all but the porites increased feeding rates with particle concentraition.
Most commercially available phytoplanktons are 2-15 microns, but are not generally a preferred food source for SPS- will feed clams, as well as many polychaete worms and copepods who may in turn feed the corals directly or with there gametes and young.
DTs oyster eggs are 45 microns- I think a good choice to feed corals nutritionally and size wise
Rotifers are generally 130-340 microns- should be enriched-good size though
Newly hatched brine is 400-500 microns- not a very good nutritional profile, stylo will eat it and probably others will too, but will they thrive on it???
Cyclopeeze is about 800 microns- probably to large for most SPS- however good choice nutritionally for LPS, fish, anything that will eat them IMO.
I am always looking for a food with a particle size of 10-400ish microns to try. I am particularly interested in dry commercially available coral feeds for the convenience, and new variety in general. I avoid commercial feeds with phyto as a main ingredient since I grow my own fresh. I also avoid products with to many fillers, or that don’t list there ingredients or size ranges. Also I look for foods high in HUFAs and AA rather then supplementing them with food soaks and such. Golden pearls come in many sizes that you can choose but have fillers like whey that I am unsure of? I think my favorite pick right now for a convenient coral food is Coral Frenzy. It is 53-1700 microns according to the manufacturer and has good ingredients-I think it should feed a wide variety of corals. However, I still feed various fresh and frozen foods too.
Hope that was a little helpful
Cheers,
Tracy
