what causes acro and birds nest to bleach out and how can you reverse it

There can be tons of reasons sps corals including seriatopora or birdsnest bleach out. Some but not limited to incorrect lighting, bad water chemistry, not enough flow, acro. eating flatworms, chemical-meaning something introduced to the tank, bad acclimation techniques, wrong placement in the tank, RTN, STN. I'm sure others can add way more.

Some if caught in time can be reversed but it has ro be diagnosed quick so you know what to change to help the coral.

Well like Sue said there are a lot of reasons that you could be having problems. Sometimes they don't like a big change in water chemistry when changing tanks. If they are truly bleached, then it is reversable. If they RTN however, that is it they are toast.

Chris,
One of the big things that can cause bleaching is swings in different parameters; PH, Alk, temp to name a few. SPS like stable parameters. When things change quickly then tend to bleach. Have you changed anything in your tank lately? Added new lighting, dosed something different, water change with different salt mix?

Keep us posted and we'll sort out the cause.

thanks ED. There are always so many unexplainables when dealing with bleaching. Mine neglect.

i need to learn more about sps corals any recomended reading.....oh and what is rtn

RTN is Rapid Tissue Necrosis. Reading....hmmmm....I learned a lot from reading this site and reefcentral (with a grain of salt). As far as books, I like The Reef Aquarium by Sprung and Delbeek. There are a slew of other books out there though.

My best learning was from finding other reefers that had been keeping SPS for a while successfully and learn what they were doing differently from the folks that were failing (i.e. lots of flow, lighting, clear water, good skimmer, etc.).

Hello,
"Aquarium Corals" by Eric Borneman is a also good book.

The top reasons for SPS corals to bleach (loose color) or loss of tissue listed in frequency are: (IME/IMO)

Temperature.
Sudden increases in lighting intensity.
Swings in alkalinity, calcium, etc. in short time frames.
Changes in multiple water parameters like from one tank to another, or from the wild to captive environment.
High levels of organic compounds.

HTH,
Kevin
