so anyone have an answer to my questions about the size of adding a new False Perc to my existing one? or should I wait till it grows a little more before adding another one?
well 3 days ago I went and bought another osc. clown to try to pair up with my older clown. the one i bought was a little over an inch long. I named the new one Subway (yes after the sub shop) and the old one is of course called Nemo. on the 1st day Nemo chased Subway around and around the tank. Once I saw Nemo do the seizure dance but Subway just ran away. 2nd day Nemo wasn't chasing Subway around the tank and they seemed to be a little closer. Well today Subway is in the anemone with Nemo and I just saw Subway do the seizure dance and Nemo did it back at him. Pretty exciting! I know it's kinda weird to sit and watch your fish dance at each other but it's kewl as heck. So hopefully I have a mated pair now. I can't believe how quickly Subway is in the anemone. It took Nemo 3 months to even look at it. Thanks Tom for the information! it helped!
Clownfishes have a unique reproductive behaviour where the lagest is always the dominant female. The next ladgest is a male and the rest are suppressed juviniles. The juviniles will not develop sexuall maturity until one of the mated pair vacates. the next largest juvinile will then become a sexually mature male. The male will turn into a female.
The perc's and ocellaris can be kept in groups (more than five) but the maroon's and the tomato's must be kept in pairs with tankmates that are able to defend themselves. Pairs can be kept in tanks as small as twenty gallons but fifty should be a minimum for any significant amount of tankmates.
An excellent book on Clownfishes by Wilkerson is a must for any but the casual aquarist. She goes over the different types of anenomoes in both the wild and captivity. The bubble-tip's seem to be the best for both durability and acceptability.
i bought a clarki for my first clown about a year ago and just added a smaller one about 2 months ago and the first clown would'nt let they other in the lta until a week ago and now they both share it and hang together constantly and they do the dance too so i'm thinking they paired up clarki's would be my choice.
hey wooddood - would you post a picture of your clarki's? i'm not sure i'd recognize them so i'm curious as to what they look like. especially in a home reef tank.
Speaking about clown color, do they change color when they mature into different sex? Like does male to female changes color or supressed to male changes color? Do behaviors change too?
I got a single false clown (it was in a group at LFS and was not the most aggressive one, looks like the second largest). Since it is in my tank (only clown) it has gotten more aggressive and color is slight darkening.
I have 2 true percula clowns. I also feed them cyclopeeze, spirulina flakes and mysis shrimp. They seem to be very healthy and vibrant. I also highly recommend the cyclopeeze. It is sold as a frozen brick.
yeah i feed my clowns the same. the frozen brick is relatively cheap and lasts a long long long long time. i'm beginning to wonder if i should toss the rest and buy new stuff because the brick i have is probably 3 - 4 months old and i still have over 3/4 of it left. i keep it deeply frozen though.
I shave some pieces cyclopeeze off the brick, and put the brick back in a freezer storage bag before returning it to the freezer. This way it avoids any freezerburn and lasts longer.
I bought my cyclop-eeze at Blue Sierra. I think it was 7 or 8 for a frozen brick. If you want some to try I have more than plenty and would be willing to share.
as far as opinions on percs and ocellaris. i really don't know the difference. when i bought my first clown i didn't know more than one type existed. i just wanted a clown. i'm extremely happy with my ocellaris....well both of them now since i just purchased a 2nd. both of my clowns host in my LTA without problems. hopefully someone else can give us more info on the differences.
Well I did some research. The differences are as follows: (somone correct me if this info isn't correct) True Percs are typically a brighter orange than the Ocellaris and a little less hardy and looks wise Percs have more black on them than Ocellaris. It also seems that the Percs will grow a little larger than Ocellaris (especially in the wild) That's all I could really find about their differences.
