But I want to hide the lighting! The setting I have in mind for the rimless tank is one of clean contained beauty. I want as little as possible of the machinery that goes into a tank to show. I like the idea of a micro reef spontaneously appearing on my desk almost removed from reality. I want people to think "Oh! A reef!" and not "Oh! A fish tank!" I am not quite (maybe) insane enough to drill a 7 gallon nano for overflow but I was thinking about it.

Chelseagrin, you are right! I am going to have to revise my opinion on lighting. I suppose I meant that the lighting should not seem so mundane on a rimless tank. In this sense wooden canopies and hardware store chain do not appeal to me.

on a rimless you just have to make sure to keep all your cords tidy and concealed within a stand. best to have an outlet tight behind the tank. the point of a rimless is to be minimalist and spotless, without this the effect is ruined.
