my tank swings about 3 degrees a day, 83 to about 80 or a decimal or to lower, is that to much? it's a softie tank with a frogspawn and fish

hmm ya, i can't seem to get it to stay lower at night, i need more plug room to fit another timer... all i have funds for is a fan, i use one home fan for when the lights are on it's about a foot in diameter

My softies look miserable over 80. I turn the lights off and open doors and get fans when I hit 80. I have a fan on the sump all the time. During the day sometimes I just open the canopy doors for extra circulation.

Maybe just unplug you heater? I did that during the summer. Now it's winter and I live in Chicago it gets cold. My tank goes around 78.5 at night and during day it can reach as high as 81.5. I freak out when it gets at 81.9! 83 is high though. Ideally <---did I spelled that right? keep it between 78-82. Everyone does fine in my tank.

i dunno how much my heater's on, cause it's set to 78 maybe i'll try that next week as i'll be gone in mexico this coming week

Well either try unplugging it or set it at the lowest temp.

I have found that just directing fan flow on the water (whether it be in the sump or on the show tank) does a nice job of cooling down a tank. You would be surprised at the power of evaporative cooling. I used used those small, clip on fans (used in dorm rooms) and placed it in the sump.

As to your original question, I would say it is a bit high, although nothing too alarming in my experience...

Take er easy

ya, this is with using a 12 inch fan, i use it ocelating though so it's not always directly on the tank, maybe i'll stop doing that

Thanks for the help, i realized a week or so ago, perhaps a bit more that the heater in the lower tank was set to 86!!! so ya, i fixed the problem, and now i don't even need a fan and i get very little temperature swing, less then a degree i think, steady at 78 or so, thanks for the help and my softies have started growing faster too,
