I have not been able to identify this fish and I've looked and looked, does anybody know? He's also the fish on my avatar. He's about 4" and acts like a dwarf angel/damsel. I recently found out he likes to pick at certain corals too :( He's a beautiful deep purple though, very pretty, so I'm thinking of keeping him and starting a FOWLR for him. It was suggested he might be a purple reef fish, but after seeing pictures, that's not it at all. He really looks like some type of dwarf angel or damsel. I got him from a tank that was sorely neglected, and they had no idea what he was either. He is fairly hardy and he prefers to be in amongst the rocks, if they're available. Sorry if the picture is not very big, but when I tried to attach, it kept saying the file was too large........

i am not an expert so let others chime in.... looking in books... and close up pics may help too...looks more like an angel (especially if picking at corals) maybe White tail angel..Centropyge flavicauda

I'll agree with you FishinInTheDark. Looks like a Damsel to me as well.

Looks more like Plectroglyphidodon from what I can see. Can you get a better profile shot?

Cheers

Sorry about the actinics on, but I am trying to reduce some algae growth and they're all on timers, etc...... don't know if these will help any more or not. He does sort of look like a blue devil, but he is a solid purple. He is territorial like a damsel. I've never seen a purple one though, so I'm wondering if anyone else has? Maybe he is a close relative to the blue devil?

Do a google image search for:
http://images.google.com/

Plectroglyphidodon
Stegastes
Neoglyphidodon

See what you come up with...

I found it, thanks!!!

It's a caerulean damsel, pomacentrus caeruleus, the picture looks exactly like my fish :)

On second thought, after looking at more pictures, all other pictures of the caerulean have yellow on it and look blue, but that picture IS my fish, so maybe it was mislabeled?

I think it may be a Creole Damsel, Pomacentrus agassizi

Not sure, the images provided of your fish are not all that clear. If you get the op for better clearer images of the profile in good light, it may help. Of the two links you posted, it "appears" to be closer to the melas.

Cheers
Steve
